Applicatinn flled January 27, 1925. Serlal N0. 5,180.
SCHREIBER,
a Citizen o f Czechoslovalna, residing m;
Prg'ue, Czechoslovakia, hav'e invented certain new' anduseful Improveinents in Light Machine Gnus, of which the following is a specifica'tion.
. ;This inventin relates" to light n'1achine gunls bf 'th kind in which1no provis'io'n is made forwater cooling and consistrs in an arrdngement which enables' the hol; barrel to bejreadily exghanged by f0ur manipula+ tions'z'md 'without changihg the position of thegun.v. In bhe ad0r'npanfingdrawings,

' ba rrel A with its acctessor ies The ni2whine gun comprises four main -1.2The" gun F-5.
2;The. gunjcasing B, containing the gun l0ck and feed device und hzwing at its front face ahoqk-shapedextension 6 and a locking paw-l7.
3. The piston cylinder O 'for the operating pisto-n 14. This pi ston cylinder extends with its -forward; end 9 into a, bore 11- of the barrel-head 2 (Fig. 7), While its rear end is -provided with a segmental flange 8 which eng'ages-a slit formed by the hook-shaped extensi on 6 of the gun caaing B. The piston cylinder C also carries a saddle 10 for the upport of the gun barrelA.
4. A pa.ir o'f folding le D suitably connected to thepiston cylin er.
In action the hllet an leaving the bar'rel passeS through the barrel head 2 -and the silencer 3.
The gases issuing from thebarrel immediately behind the bullet am trapped in the barrel head 2 and their pressure actuates the piston 14 against th e spring by 'Whih it is supported. This backward movement of the piston 14 actua'tes in known manner the devices housed in the gun casing B Whereupon the spring i's released a nd the piston resumes its initial position, ready to repeat the' Operation.
The barrel A i s secured by meaxis of a segmental or intelrupted screw th1 e ad 1 in a correspondingly interrupted female thread in the bare 0;E the gun Casing B.
In order to enable the barrel when hol; t0 be grasped by the band for thepurpose of exchange it is provided with a handle 5 of h at msulating material. This handle in order to avoid obst-ructing the sights when taking aim, 'is adapted to be turned around on the barrel through an angle 0f approz'zimately90 The barrel head 2, the silencer 3, and the s ight 4 are rigidly seoured t0 the barr.el A,
while the pisto n 'the barrel head 2.
When it is desired to exchange the barrel A together With its accessories (Fig. 1) the locking pawl 7 is'released a1id the gun casing swung as in Fig. 2 the respeotive positiom-before a:nd after such operation being illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
This movement has caused the interrupted screw threads 1 of the biurel A 130 be released so that the barrel an now be completely withdrawn, by being shifted axially forvvardby mea'ns cf the handle 5, and be left to' cool.
cylinderfits slidably infio The 001d reserve barrel is planed onlzhe saddle 10 and inserted into the gun cas ing B ui1til stopped by its collar 16, w hen the casing isswung back to fonner position. The locking pawl 7 reengages automatically and the machine gun is restored to its original p0'siti0h (Fig. l) so that after turning the barrel handle 5 doWn, firing can be c0ntinued.
The exchange of the barrels ca.n thus, ac-
cordin to this invention be efiected in a most s1mple und. qnick manner, by bhe peroollar 16 o-f the barrel so as to facilitate Ehe positioning of the barrel in the gun casing.
The barrel head 2 is rigidly secured bo the barrel while the hollow adjusting nipple 13, serves on be one band 130 secure the silencer and an i;he other hand to allow the bu1let to pass through.
For firing blank cartridges, the silencer 3 is removed and the adjusting m'pple 13 is replaoed by a nipple having a r ricted bore, so that Ehe paper Wad is fofcibly passed through the said bore and sufiieient gas. Pressnre is created in the ba.rrel head 2 to actuate .the piston Affier a reat num-ber of shots ha3 been fired, w er residue accumula tes in the harre} ead. In orderto enable this to be cleaned out from iime to time, a perforatibn 12 is provided whieh during firin is close by the shovel-shaped end 9 of t e piston cy'linder Fig. 4 so as to prevent .leaka ge df %nses. When the barrelis renioved the perb(l ration 12 is uneovered and thus adcessie.
The oscillatory 'displacement and maintenan ce of t-he un casing B is ietermined 011 the one han by the pa:wl 7 coo erating with the no=tch 17 and 011 the other and by the Pin 19 in co-operation with thenotch 18,

pylind'er C embra ces the cylindrical boss -22 of the casin" B, Figs. l, 9, while the W- er Part forme by the segmentsil flange at the said end 8 engages the segmental groove 21, Figs.9 10.
Fig. 8 shows the 8.0131011 of the paw1 7 wh-ich under the pressure of the sprmg-ac tuated holt is constrained to aubomat1cally\enber into holding engagement when the casing is brought back into its original position.
