Description

G. J. PALAITH GAME APPARATUS Filed June 1922 Patented Aug. 11, 1925,
- Application filed June 29, 1922. Serial No. 571,619.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. PALAITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to game apparatus which is operable to simulate a horse race, and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved game of this kind which can be played by several persons and which is made interesting by affording the players opportunity to display their skill in operating the apparatus.
The object stated is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claim-ed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus with parts broken away, and
Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the base of the device consists of a sheet metal plate 5 having a depending marginal flange 5 adapted to seat on a table or other support. At the center of the base plate is a bearing 6 for a vertical spindle 7 depending from, a spider 8 which carries a disk 9 of wood, cardboard or other light material. The disk 9 is therefore rotatably supported, it being positioned a short distance inside an encircling annular wall 10 rising from the base plate a short distance inwardly of the edge of the latter. The base plate is substantially circular, it being formed with a lateral extension 11 The disk 9 has near its edge an upstanding annular flange 12 shaped at intervals into differently colored figures 13, such as horses and their riders. The disk is rotatable so that the figures may successively pass a goal, which latter may be a flag 14L having its staff 15 mounted on and rising from the extension 11 of the base 5.
An actuator for the disk 9 is provided, the same being a lever 16 fulcrumed inter mediate its ends, as shown at 17, to the base GEORGE J. ZE'ALAI'II-I, OF CI'IIGAGO', ILLINOIS.

plate 5 at the top thereof. One end of this lever extends through a slot 18 in the wall 10 to project from the outside thereof, the slot being long enough to permit the necessary swing of the lever to rotate the disk 9. The inner end of the lever is pressed by a spring 19 and works under a guide 20 carried by the base plate. The arms of the spider 8 form radially extending projections on the bottom of the disk 9, and these projections are positioned so as to be engageable by the inner end of the lever 16.
To set the disk 9 in motion, the lever 16 is swung in a direction to place the spring 19 under tension, after which the lever is released, whereupon it is swung by the spring to deliver a sharp blow against one of the arms of the spider 8, which causes the disk to spin around carrying the figures 13 past the goal 14. The game may be played by several persons, each player choosing one of the figures, and the player whose figure stops opposite or nearest the goal is the winner. The game therefore simulates a horse race, and while the winning play is largely a matter of chance, the operation of the disk 9 can be controlled to some extent by a skillful manipulation of the lever 16. The game is thereforemade interesting and the players have opportunity to exercise their skill in controlling the movement of the disk so as to bring the selected figure to the goal.
I claim:
Agame apparatus comprising a base, a spider having aspindle rotatably connected to said base, said spider consisting of a plurality of radially arranged arms extending a substantial distance outwardly from said spindle, a disk mounted on the arms of said spider, a lever connected to said base and adapted to engage one of said radial arms to operate said disk, a lever guide connected to said base, and a leaf spring confined between said lever and one end of said guide.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE J. PALAITH.
