AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, SAMUEL LAUTENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Amusement Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in amusement devices and has for its principal object to provide a round-about which will afford great amusement to children.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide an amusement device of the above mentioned character wherein the carriage is adapted to be pro pelled by the occupant so that the carriage will travel on the track from which it is suspended in a circular direction.
A further object is to provide an amusement device of the above mentioned character, which may be readily assembled and disassembled, the same being further simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted forthe purposes for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the supporting base and extending upwardly therefrom is the standard or upright 2. The standard tapers gradually towards its upper end and supported thereon is the circular head 3, the same being provided with the central tapered opening 4 whereby the head will be supported on the smaller upper end of the standard against 12, 1925. accidental displacement therefrom. The circular head 3 is provided with a series of spaced vertically extending slots 5, the same being dove-tailed as clearly illustrated in Figure 2.
A plurality of track supporting arms 6 extend radially from the head 2, the inner end of each arm being provided with a dovetailed head 7 for detachable engagement with the respective dove tailed slots formed in the periphery of the circular head. Each of the arms is further provided with an auxiliary arm 8 which is disposed above the inner end of the arm, the auxiliary arm 8 being also provided at its inner or free end with the dove tailed head 9 for engagement with the respective dove tailed slots. As is clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings, the dove-tailed head 7 is disposed in the lower portion of each slot while the dove-tailed head 9 is disposed in the upper portion of each of said slots, thus enabling the track supporting arms which extend radially from the circular head 2 to be supported in a rigid horizontal position.
The track 10 is in the form of a channeled ring, the flange which extends upwardly from the inner periphery of the ring being designated by the numeral 11, while the upstanding flange provided at the outer periphery of the ring is designated at 12. The track 10 is suspended from and sup ported by the outer end of the radially extending arms 6 through'the medium of the chains 13. The lower ends of the chains are adapted to be secured to the track at a point between the inner and outer flanges thereof. The chains 13 furthermore permit the track 10 to move inwardly and outwardly when the amusement device is in operation.
The carriage or, rider support is designated generally by the numeral 1 1, the same comprising the frame 15, the upper end of which is enlarged and cut out to provide a pair of arms 16 and 17. The lower end of the frame is also enlarged and out out to provide a pair of arms 18 and 19 respectively. A pair of grooved wheels 20 and 21 are supported on suitable shafts and 23 respectively which are provided in the upper ends of the arms 16 and 17 respectively. The grooved wheel 20 is adapted. for engagement with the outer flange 12 whereas the grooved wheel 21 is adapted to travel over the inner flange 11. A beveled gear 24 is secured on .the shaft 23 and the same meshes with a beveled gear 25 which is supported on the upper end of the drive shaft 26, the latter extending upwardly through the frame 15. The driving bevel gear 25 is disposed below the track 10 in the manner as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 4: of the drawings. The beveled .gear 24 is also disposed inwardly from the inner flange 11 so that the carriage or rider support 14 is free to travel in a circular manner around the track.
A shaft 27 is journaled transversely through the arms 18 and 19 formed on the lower end of the frame 15 and the outer end of the shaft 27 is provided with the foot engaging crank 28 whereby the shaft 27 will be rotated when the foot cranks are operated. A bevel gear 29 is secured on the shaft 27 and meshes with a similar bevel gear 30 secured on the lower end of the drive shaft 26, thus enabling the drive shaft 26 to be rotated when the foot cranks are actuated. A seat 31 is supported on the lower portion of the frame 15 as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
The operation of the carriage may be briefly stated as follows: The occupant of the carriage is seated on the seat 31 and the feet of the child are in engagement with the foot cranl: 28. The operation of the foot crank will cause the shaft 27 to ro tate simultaneously rotating the drive shaft 26 through the bevel gearing 29 and 30. The drive shaft 2 5 will in turn rotate the wheel 21 through the medium of the inter-- meshing beveled gears and 24- and the grooved wheels 20 and 21 will then be caused to travel around the upper edges of the outstanding flangcs. During the traveling of the carriage in {a circular manner around the support 2, the chains 13 will permit the traclz to sway inwardly and outwardly. An amusement device of the above men-- tioned character. will afford considerabna pleasure to small children. If desired, any number of carriages may he placed or suspended from the track so that a number of children may use the round-about at one time.
The simplicity in which the amusement device embodying the present invention constructed, enables the same to be readily assembled or disassemb l. Furthermore. the provision of the grotr'cd wheels and the inner and outer flanges on the track will prevent the carriage from accidentally becoming disengaged therefrom.
Vin .e 1 have shown the preferred. emboniment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to. wi .iout departing from the spirit of the intention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what- I claim as new is 1. An amusement device comprising a vertical standard, a head supported on the upper end thereof, a plurality of arms extending radially from said head, a ring-like track, upstanding annular flanges provided at the inner and outer peripheries respectively of said track, means for suspending the same from the arms, a rider support, a pair of grooved wheels mounted in the upper ends of said support and adapted for engagement with the respective upstanding flanges, and means for propelling said rider support whereby the wheels are adapted to travel around the flanges.
2. An amusement device comprising a vertical standard, a head supported on the upper end thereof, a plurality of arms extending radially from said head, a ring-like track, upstanding annular flanges provided at the inner and outer peripheries respectively of said track, means for suspending the same from the arms, a rider support, a pair of grooved'wheels mounted in the up per ends of said support and adapted for engagement with the respective upstanding flanges, and means for propelling said rider support whereby the wheels are adapted to travel around the flanges, said means comprising a drive shaft extending longitudinally through said rider support, a beveled gear associated with one of said grooved wheels, an additional beveled gear on the upper end of the drive shaft engaging the aforementioned beveled gear, and means associated with the lower end of the rider support for actuating the drive shaft.
3. An amusement device comprising a vertical standard, a head supported on the upper end thereof, a plurality of arms extending radially from said head, a ringlike track, upstanding annular flanges provided at the inner and outer peripheries respectively of said track, means for suspending the same from the arms, a rider sup port, a pair of grooved wheels mounted in the upper ends of said support and adapted for engagement with the respective upstanding flanges, means for propelling said rider support whereby the wheels are adapted to travel around the flanges, said means comprising a drive shaft extending longitudinally through said rider support, a beveled gear associated with one of sait grooved wheels, an additional beveled gear on the upper end of the drive shaft engaging the aforementioned beveled gear, means associated with the lower end of the rider support for actuating the drive shaft, said last mentioned means con'iprising an actuating shaft extending transversely through the lower end of the rider support, foot cranks associated with said transverse shaft, a beveled gear on said shaft, an additional bevel gear on the lower end of the drive shaft meshing with the last mentioned beveled gear.
4. An amusement device comprising a base, a vertical standard, a circular head detachably supported on the upper end of with dove tailed head for detachable engagement with the respective dovetailed slots, a channeled annular track, means for suspending the same from the outer ends of said arms, an occupant propelled carriage suspended from the track and adapted to travel in a circular manner around the standard.
