i UNITED STATES JULIUS BING, Ol EISENACH, GERMANY.
MAGNETIC CHUCK.
Application led lAugust 6, 1923.
To all toll/m t may concern.:
Be it known that I, JULiUs BING, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at 18 Fischweide, Eisenach, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Magnetic Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in magnetic chucks. Magnetic chucks such as are now in use are made from cast steel or gray iron blocks the dimensions oi which correspond to the desired size of the chuck. Therefore numerous blocks of different sizes must be kept in store corresponding to apparatus of the desired sizes or types, which causes high running expenses. rThe object of the improvements is to reduce the running expenses by composing electromagnetic chucks of different sizes and forms trom a small number of standard cast iron or cast steel blocks. 1n the practice of the invention compose the chucks from three or more parts, the median part being the main body of the chuck and consisting` of magnetic material and being substantialiy of even cross-section throughout its length. Guly a small number of such main bodies need be kept in store, all of the said bodies being distinguished substantially by their cross-sections. According to the desired size of the chuck a main body of the proper cross-section is taken, which is reduced to the length corresponding to the desired form of the chuck. Thereafter the magnetic coil is placed into the cut-out parts of the body, caps are secured to the open ends ot the boty, and finally a cover is placed on the parts, which can readily be cut to the proper length. l
1n order that my invention be more clearly understood an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,
Fig. 1, is an elevation partly in section showing the chuck with the median part broken away,
Fig. 2, is a top plan view partly in section,
Fig. 3, is a vertical cross-section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Figs. 4 and 5, are elevations on a reduced scale showing two chucks of different lengths, the median parts being cut from the same cast iron block.
Serial No. 656,089.
1n the example shown in the figures the body of the chuck is made in three sections, a median section 1 and two end sections 2 and 3 in the form of caps. The median section consists of a body of magnetizable material suchas cast steel or gray iron in the form of the letter m7 and having a web or body portion 4, flange portions 6, 6 and a core 5, the cross-section of the body being substantially the same all over the length thereof. The flange portions 6, 6 and the core have the same height.
The end portions 2 and 3 are made from non-magnetic material such as brass or aluminum and they are in the form of semicylindrical caps having their open sides at the sides of the body 1 and equipped with flanges 7 and 8. The end portion 3 is foi-ined with a tubular portion 9 projecting outwardly and in the direction of the longitudinal axis and having a cylindrical cap 10 secured thereto. Fitted in and insulated from the bottom of said box are two contact pins 1l having the terminals 12, 12 of a magnetic coil 13 secured thereto. As shown the said coil is enclosed within a. waterproof sheath made for example from a lead plate having its seams soldered and formed with a tubular portion 15 passed through the tubular portion 9 and having a flange 16 clamped in a tight way between a flange 17 of the member 10 and the adjacent margin of the portion 9 by means of screws 18.
1n assembling the chuck the coil 13 embedded within the sheath 1K1 is placed around the core 5 and between the same and the flanges 5, and a plate 19 having the same length and the same breadth as the body 1 is placed on the same, which plate consists of two outer portions 20, 2O and an inner portion 21 both of magnetic material and corresponding respectively to the flanges 6, 6 and the core 5, and of narrow lamellte 22 and 23 fitted between the said portions 2O and 21 and alternately made from magnetic and non-magnetic material. rlhe portions 20, 21 and 22, 23 are ina-de from standard bars cut in each case to the length corresponding 'to the type of the chuck, and they are connected with each other by bolts 27. rThe caps 2 and 3 are secured to the body 1 and the top plate 19 respectively by means of screws 21- and 25, and the top plate is fixed in position by means of screw bolts` passed through the core 5. 1f it is desired to manufacture a chuck of the saine breadth, which, horvever, is reduced in length, l reduce a standard body l in length by cutting therefrom a part of its length and I place thereon a coil 155 of reduced length. Further, the plate 1 9 is made from strips or lamellze cut Vfrom the standard bars to the proper length. The remaining parts generally need not be changed in forni, with the exception that the vertical corners of the core 5 at the :tace of the cut preferably will be rounded as indicated at 29 in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that by lineans of a feiv lcastings of standard Vsize a large number of chucks of different sizes may be manufactured, whereby the expenses oit the manufacture are considerably reduced.
I' claim:
l. An electro-magnetic chuck, consisting of a` channel-like body ot magnetizable material formed With a web between the chaunel flanges and having substantially the saine cross section all over its length, electric energizing means Within said body, a pole piece composed of magnetizable and non-magnetic portions, secured to the flanges and the Web of said body, coil covering caps secured to the end faces ot said body, and means tor leading` electric current to said' energizing means.
2. An electro-magnetic chuck, comprising an iron body formed with lateral flanges and a core portion between said flanges, said flanges and core projecting 'from the body to the same side and the cross-sections oit said body together with said flanges and core portion all over the length off the body having substantially the same configuration, an
electric coil mounted on said core portion, aslab-like pole piece having substantially the length of said body covering the flanges andcorc portion of the body, and caps sccured to the end faces of said body tor corering the coil.
8. An electro-magnetic chuck, comprising a body olf magnetizable material having flange and core portions projecting to the saine side and having the saine cross-section throughout its length, an electric coil mounted on said core portion, a pole piefe r composed oit' inagnetizable and non-magnetic portions and connecting the flange and core portions of said body, and caps secured to the end faces of said flanges and oll said pole piece for covering the coil.
l. An electro-magnetic chuck, compi" ci" a body of magnetizable material having 'flange and core portions projecting to the saine side and having the saine cross-section throughout :its length, an electric coil mounted on said core portion, a pole piece composed of magnetizalile and nonen'iagnetic portions and connecting the flange and core portions of said body, and semicylindrical caps secured to the end faces of said flanges and el? said pole piece tor cwering the coil, one of' said caps being jlorined with a tubular portion having the terminals ot' said coil passed theretln'ough.
ln testimony I aflix my signature in presence ot two Witnesses.
JULIUS BING'.
