THOMAS H. WOOD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO J. B. BREWSTER & OO., OF SAME PLAGE.
j IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINGS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,816, dated September 8, 1874; application filed June 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. Woon, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Springs, of`
` were granted to me on the 27th day of May,
1873, No. 139,348; and has for its object to prevent, in' a side/-bar wagon, the carriage body from crowding the upper set of springs in contact with the reach.
My present invention consists in making the upper set of tr-ansverse springs (those which are above the side bars) U-shaped, so
that one arm and end of each of these springs will be secured to the-side bar, and the other to the carriage-body. This construction requires the use of four such upper springs, and causes an open space tothe left between them above the reach, so that they can never be crowded in` contact with said reach.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents the front axle, and B the hind axle, of a half-spring wagon. C and D are the two upwardlybowed semielliptic springs, which rest on and are secured to the axles A and B, respectively. The ends of the springs G D connect with the side bars E E, as shown. F F F F are four U-shaped springs, of which two are secured with their lower ends to each of the two side bars, the upper ends of all being fastened to the carriage'body G. Suitable clips or other fastenings may be used to secure the springs F to the side bars. The length of the springs F is such that they do not reach across the space between the side bars, but leave an open space between them, so that, if the wagon-body is depressed, it cannot crowd said springs upon the reach. Moreover, the springs F can be produced at a less cost than the semi-elliptic upper springs described in my aforementioned Letters Patent, and give fully the same degree of strength.
The same invention will apply `when the springs C D are dispensed withand the side bars directly connected to the axles.
I clailn as my invention- The U-shaped transverse springs F F, in combination with the side bars E E and wagon-body G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Trios. E. woon.
