Be it known that I, DANIEL M. WINApNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bingham-ton, and the county of Broome and the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Rod Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto a novel detach able curtain rod `fastener or carrierifor vehicle doors and the likewhereit is desired to securely hold a curtain rod near the outermost end of a swinging door and provide support for the curtain thereon, and yet be able to conveniently detach the rod at will.
The objectY of the present invention is to produce a neat and efficient curtain rod socket and a positive lock fasteningmeans for inserted rod, more especially such as are intended to be used in connection with motor car or carriage door curtains.
It is the further object of this invention to provide for a concealed socket member that maybe set into a recess formed in edgeof theheadpiece of the door frame, and. to provide for a lever locking device for lsaid. socket adapted to engage and interlock with lthe inserted curtain rod, to the 'end that said rod is positively held in said socket and prevented from lifting or turning until the lever is manipulated. A l With ythese objects in. view", the socket proper is preferably provided with an integral rib member projecting laterally from the tubular part'of the socket. These parts are adapted to lieflush with the face of the head piece and are neatly concealed behind an escutcheon plate. The projecting rib member may be suitably slotted to provide for pivotally mounting the lever therein. When said lever is placed into longitudinal alignment withv the rib` it snugly engages with a keyseat cut into the rod and looks the curtain rod in place.
The present inventionr therefore provides for an improved carrier means for quickly and positively locking `or unlocking the curtain rod into its socket. .Embodied herein are also other Ifeatures of structure and ar one sheet drawing which illustrates an eX- ample of the preferred form of my invention, like characters of reference indicating likefparts in the several views, and in which drawing: l

.Referring first to Fig. 1, the hinged verlcle ldoor 1 shown partially opened, is provided'w'ith the conventional lock yhandle 2 and a flat upper rail or head piece 3', suit-A ably recessed to receive my socket device which is designated in its entiretyl as 4. The lower edge of the side curtain 6 for the door is suitably fastened to the head piece 3, while one of the lverticaledges of said curtain is exibly attached to the extended by the bar or rod 7 in the usual manner and mounted within. the fabric pocket 7a. Asv is best indicated in'F ig. 5, the rod 7 is preferably given a double bend to allow rfor the dierence in alignment between the offset curtain plane and set rod socket. 1
' As shown in Fig. 2, the lower portion of the rod is loosely rguided in the tubular socket member la'.V The rod end is undercut to provide lfor a squared support 'part 7b while the lower socket end is equipt with a registering shoulder lug 4b which projects into and across the interior of the socket cavity and is adapted to abut the squared rod offset 7h. The purpose of the shoulder element of the lug is to give proper support to the rod and while the fitted vertical face the axis Yof the inthereof prevents the bent-rod 7 from turning about the socket axis. lt will also be observed that the rod 7 is further provided with a rounded or dished keyseat 7 which is preferably milled into the rod surface, and the purpose of which will be more fully explained hereinafter.
It is preferred to provide the upper end portion of the socket la with a relatively thin and integrally formed flange part 4C which in the present instance is shown as projecting at right angles from the socket cavity and serves as an escutcheon plate to conceal the remaining socket parts. The underside of this flange is suitably reenforced against vertical deection by the rib member ld which may also be formed integral and projects laterally from the socket cavity Ll, so as to terminate in the dished cup part 4e. A narrow slot or lever seat 4f may be cut lengthwise of the rib to extend from the cup l., on a sloping angle toward the cavity of the socket for the purpose of snugly mounting the lock lever 8 therein.
When said slot is used, this lever may be pivotally mounted intermediate its ends about the fulcrum pin 8a and so as to swing freely from its horizontal position lengthwise of the rib 4d as shown in full lines, into its lifted oblique posit-ion as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The short end of said lever disposed adjacent to the socket cavity 4a is suitably rounded with respect to the fulcrum axis to constitute a lock-key as indicated at 8b. This portion is preferably made to project intosaid socket contour to cooperate with the rod whenever the lever lies in its full-lined or flush position so that t-he key end 8b may then snugly engage the keyseat 7C and become positively interlocked therewith in the manner shown in Fig. 2.
The other or free end of the lock lever 8 is provided with oppositely disposed side lips such as 8c which are adapted to drop into the circular contour of the cup le while the outermost end of the lever together with said lips, are cut off squarely with respect to the lever axis and thus constitute a convenient manipulating edge. for raising the lever into its disengaged position which is shown dotted in Fig. 2.
l/Vhen in this raised position, the rounded end of the lever designated as 8b is thereby fully withdrawn from the keyseat 7C and this unlocked relation allows of freely lifting the rod 7 out of its socket whenever it is desired to remove the curtain 6 from the door l.
It will be apparent that the spaced relation between the keyseat 7C and the abutting shoulder faces formed between rod offset 7b and t-he socket lug 41 is dependent upon the length of the socket tube 4a used, and that said keyseat is intended to properly align with the rounded end of the lever end 8b so as to allow of snug engagement with the keyseat 7C whenever the lever is swung into its flush position.
As indicated in Fig. 2, the socket tube la is intended to be inserted into a hole formed into the top face of the door head piece Said face is also preferably further recessed to permit of inserting the laterally disposed rib member ld therein while the escutcheon plate or flange le is made to overhang the edges of the recess so as to neatly trim the same. It will be evident that said opening in the head piece 3 is to be cut back and beveled where it meets the socket hole to provide necessary clearance for the stipulated swinging of the lever 8.
Suitable fastening means such as the wood screw 4g, may be used to hold in place the socket device as a whole. It will be seen that the entire socket device is concealed within the door and behind the escutcheon plate Llc. Furthermore the top edge of the lever 8 when placed in its locked position, is preferably made to lie flush with the exposed face of the escutcheon plate. Only a portion of the cup remains open and this is used for manipulating the lever end, all of which serves to give the top of the door a neat and finished appearance and otherwise enhances the device for the purpose intended.
lt will be understood that the novel socket carrier parts for door curtain rods as disclosed herein, are subject to modification in construction since the various parts, as an instance the escutcheon plate l-c, need not be integrally formed as shown and various other changes in thedetails of my device may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hereinbefore described and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
Claims:
l. In al curtain rod carrier, the combination of a socket, arib-like member laterally disposed from the socket portion, an escutcheon plate serving to conceal and trim said parts, a rod adapted to be inserted into said socket, and means including a lock lever fulcrumed upon said rib-like member serving to positively lock said rod into the socket.
2. In a curtain rod carrier, the combination of a socket, a rib-like member laterally disposed from the socket, a rod adapted to be' inserted into said socket, a lug means spanning the socket cavity and serving to support the inserted end of said rod, and means including a lever fulcrumed upon said rib-like member and adapted to positively lock said rod into the socket when the lever lies in substantial alignment with said rib member and to disengage said interlocking relation when the lever is swung into oblique position with respect to said` rib member.
3. In a curtain rod carrier, the' combination of a socket, a rib-like member laterally disposed from the socket, a rod member adapted to be inserted into said socket, a lever slot for the rib member terminating in the socket cavity, a fulcrumed lock lever mounted in said slot having one end portion projecting into said cavity, a keyseat for the rod adapted to engage and interlock With the projecting end of said lever, and means for disengaging the projecting lever end from said keyseat. j
4. In a curtain rod carrier, the combination of a socket, a rib-like member laterally disposed from the socket, a rod having its end portion disposed into a support part adapted to be inserted into said socket, a fulcrumed lock lever having a projecting end portion, a keyseat for said rod adapted to engage and interlock With said projecting lever end, a support lug means for the socket cavity adapted to register with said rod end, and means for disengaging the projecting lever end from said keyseat.

a rod adapted to be inserted into the socket, a fulcrumed lock lever having a projecting end portion, a keyseat for said rod adapted to engage and interlock with said projecting lever end, a door provided with a recess in the head piece adapted to receive said socket and rib parts, an escutcheon plate serving' to cover the recess and conceal said socket and rib parts Within said head piece, and means for holding said concealed parts in place.
6. In a curtain rod carrier, the combination of a socket, a rib-like member laterally disposed from the socket and terminating into the socket cavity and the other end provided With side lips adapted to drop into the cup recess, a keyseat for said rod adapted to engage and interlock said projecting lever end, and means for di'sengaging said lever end from said keyseat.
7. In a curtain rod carrier, the combination of a socket, an integral rib-like member laterally disposed from the socket, a rod member having its end portion formed into a support part adapted to be inserted into the cavity of said socket, a lock lever fulcrumed upon said rib-like member and of Which lever one end portion is adapted to engage and interlock lWith said rod, a support lug for the socket adapted to register with said rod end and. prevent rotation of they rod.
8. In a curtain rod carrier, the combination ofV a socket, a rib-like member laterally disposed from the socket, a rod member adapted'to be inserted into the socket, a fulcrumed lock lever having a projecting end portion adapted to cooperatewith the rod, a keyseat for said rod serving to engage and interlock with said projecting end when the lever lies in substantial alignment withy said rib member and means for disengaging said projecting end from the rod seat When the lever is shifted into an oblique relation to the rib member.
