Application filed ct ober 13,i1923. f Serial No. 668,403.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MUREN, a citizen of, the United States, residing at Spoin the county of Spokane and State of have invented new and useful Improvements in Tongs, following is a specification.
=This invention relates to lifting devices, particularly to tongs its objectthe provision of a novel device designed for use in pulling piles or similar work, the essential feature being the provision of a device of this character having a plurality of jaws so mounted, arranged and connected with a pull pin that when a pull is exerted all of the jaws will be urged into gripping engagement with the article or object to be pulled, the arrangement being furthermore such that by grasping and pulling upon one jaw to effect opening, all of the jaws will be correspondingly moved.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to operate and use, positive in action, eflicient and durable in service and a generalimprovement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be herein after more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section,
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Figure 2 and Figure 4 is a detail view of the pull pin.
Referring more particularly to the drawin s I have shown a head formed with a bore 11 and having the lower end portion cut away at various spaced points as indicated at 12 to Slidable through the bore 11 in the head is a pull pin 14 equipped with any suitable attaching means, such as that indicated at 15 whereby it may be connected with ahoisting cable or the like. The lower end of this pin is enlarged as shown at 16 to prevent it from being drawn up through the bore. At a point spaced above its lower end this pull pin is formed with intersecting slots 17 which have their upper and lower edges beveled as indicated at 18 and 19 respectively.
of which the or hooks and has for the device as comprlsmg p 'Inconjunction witlrthese' parts, I provide a'plurallty of jaws 20'which are similar in construction and which may be of any desired size, length and shape and which may terminate in any suitable grab hooks 21 whereby-they may be engaged. upon a pile or other object to be pulled or lifted. These aws are arranged between the pairs of ears 13 and are pivoted 'therebetween' by suitable pins or bolts 22. At their pivoted ends these jaws are formed with elongated curved noses 23 which are received within the slots 17 and which are adapted to be engaged by the beveled ends 18 and 19 of the slots when the pin 14 is moved in or out.
In use it will be seen that by grasping one of the jaws and pulling outwardly upon it, the nose 23 thereof bearing against the lower beveled end 19 of one slot will pull the pin 14 downwardly so that all of the jaws will be automatically released. When the device is engaged. upon a pile or other object to be pulled or lifted, it is apparent that when an upward pull is applied to the pull pin, the lower ends 19 of the slots engaging against the undersides of the noses 23 will swing all of the jaws into gripping engagement with the pile or other object. Incase it is so desired, by applying pressure downwardly upon the pull pin, the beveled ends 18 of the slots therein engaging the uppersides of the noses 23 will swing all of the jaws outwardly into released position. I
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed, inexpensive and very easily operated grab hook device which will 'efliciently erform all the functions for which it is intended and which on account of the fewness of the parts should have a long and satisfactory life.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim: j
1. A device of the character described comprising a head having a bore, a pull pin slidable longitudinally through the head and provided with intersecting slots having tudinally within the bore and formed with intersecting slots having both ends beveled, a plurality of jaws pivoted between said ears, and noses on the'pivoted ends of the jaws engaged within said slots and engageable by the beveled ends thereof for controlling the position of the jaws.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN MUREN.
