Description
rra s'rArEs PATENT critica.
S. R. C. DENISON, OF ROCHESTER, NENV YORK.
CARPET-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,47 8, dated August 5, 1856.
To all 'whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, S. R. C. DENIsoN, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Method of Fastening Carpets, of which the following is a full and accurate description, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specification, and making part of the same.
The nature of my invent-ion consists in attaching to the base board, skirting or washboard of the room; a series of metallic cams, one of which is represented in the accompanying drawings as thus attached, B being the base board, and F the floor. These cams, or carpet fasteners, are attached to the baseboard by means of screws, upon which they also revolve-and being bent outward, as
seen in the drawing, they stand suflciently4 far from the base-board to allow the hem or selvage of the carpet to be passed under the cam-which on being turned downward will effectually hold the carpet to its place.
T o admit varying thicknesses in the hems or edges of carpets, it is merely necessary to vary the sweep of the cam in accordance therewithf-so adjusting it as to admit carpets of any thickness. To facilitate the locking and unlocking of the cams, the notches (a a) are cut, one on each side, affording a convenient resting place for the point of a screw driver or other` suitable instrument, by which the cams may be easily and effectively turned, and the carpet thus secured or released with ease and simplicity.
The fasteners must be so attached to the base board, as that in .locking or unlocking,
they will all move in the same direction; that is to say, toward the same point of compass along the parallel sides of the room.; so that, to detach or take up a carpet, it is only necessary, (after rst turning up one or two cams at the corners of the room,) to pull the carpet in the proper direction, by which means the cams will themselves unlock in quick succession, and the carpet be removed with ease and celerity. This feature-shown in actual experience-confers advantages upon my form of carpet fastener, possessed by no other; and it is one not only of convenience in the ordinary use of the article, but of the highest importance in cases of conagration, requiring the expeditious removal of the carpets.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is my method of fastening carpets by means of the metallic cams attached to the base-board, which cams not only hold the carpet firmly in its place, but afford facilities for its instantaneous removal in case of fire or other emergency, said cams being constructed and operating vsubstantially as described, it being understood that I do not claim the use of buttons as entirely new for fastening carpets, they having been before used in other ways, as in the fastening of Wm. Loughborough, pat.-
ented June 5th, 1857 but claim only the manner in which theyare applied as above speciied.
