I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,765, dated September 8, 1874; application filed August 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMEs W. PAR-KER, of Palmyra, Jefferson county, Wisconsin, have invented a Gorn-0utter, of which the following is a specification: I
1 My corn-cuttin g device is constructed to operate and use upon the leg and'foot of the operatorinstead of by hand, as is the more frequent mode of using corn-cutting devices or implements.
Figure l is a side perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
The device is constructed by attaching a knife, A, some nine inches long, and of proper width and shape, by the shank end, with the edge downward, in a transverse position, to a stirrup or standard, B,fitted properly to the leg and foot of the operator, and strapped or fastened thereon, so as to cause the blade to extend in a right angle or horizontal position from the leg, and outward at about the anklejoint, and ata proper forward angle of cut of about forty-five degrees from a vertical line, so as to enable the operator to strike the cornstalks with an advancing and downward motion of the knife, and thus perform the cutting wholly with the leg and foot thus armed, and leaving the hands and arms free to gather and handle the detached stalks. The stirrup is so curved at the bottom end 0 c as to clasp the sole of the foot, and at the top end 0, as also to par tially embrace the leg. Both of said embrae in gends are constructed with loops (1 to receive the fastening-straps. The stirrup or standard, at about the region of the ankle-joint, also JAMES W. PARKE a.
