Valve 29 is a rearwardly extending conical `projection on screw plug 30V which has threaded engagement with the correspondingly threaded inner wall of an axial recess in the block 15 and-opening through its forward end. The stem 31 of the screw plug 30 is received within an aperture in the inner end of a 'stem or rod 32 and is pinnedl thereto. Rod 32 is arranged axiallyV within the nose andY extends forwardly through an axial aperture in the point' of the nose. The axial aperture is provided with 'slots 33 and slidably fitting within these slots are lugs 34 3 Nut 35 has a squared aperture 36 and fits closely around the squared shank 37 of rod 32. The adjusting nut isV maintained in the position in which it is illustrated in Figure 1 by means of a spring 38 the inner end of which pressesV on the adjusting nut and the outer end of which abuts against a spring retaining nut 39 secured on the end of a spindle 40 projecting from rod 32.` A

The shutter is generally segmental in shape and is normally held in theposition in which it is shown in Figure 7, by means of a spring pressed plunger 56. In such position the fulminate detonating charge 53 is eccentric to the axis `of the shell and not in a position to communicate with either the axial passage 48 leading forwardly to the flash powder charge 47, or with the axial passage 57 leading rearwardly to the chamber 58 which contains theA boosting charge of the fuse. Shutter 52 is held in this position by means` of a plunger or inertia bolt 59 which isV normally pressed forward by a spring 60 into an aperture 61 in the 'rear yside of the bottom plug 49. The inertia bolt 59 is also adapted to enter an aperture 62 and to lock the detonator shut- 'ter in the position shown in FigureV 8, in
which the fuse is armed.
Normally the fuse is adjusted for delay action, as shown in Figure 1. Here, it will communication between branch conduit 27 and conduit 25. Y.At the moment of firing the inertia of the moving parts of the fuse causes them to exert a force on the parts immediately in their rear during acceleration of the projectile. 'Ihus the primer carrying block 15 presses against lthe centrifugal bolts 17 and prevents them from moving radially outprojectileV is being acceleratedfand hence prevents prematurecontact of the ring pin and primer and explosion of 'the projectile. lVith the cessation of acceleration, however, the centrifugal safety bolts 17-iy outwardly and no longer oppose movement lof the firing pin and Vprimer carrying blocks toward each Initial acceleration ofthe 'projectile also causesthe inertia bolt 59 to move rearwardly against the action of the spring60 and to withdraw from recess 61. Initial rotation of the'projectile occurs while pin'59 is thuswithdrawn and hence the shutter 0r detonator carrier 52 is free toA be moved laterally by centrifugal action into the position in which it is illustrated in Figure 8. When this position is reached and acceleration has ceased, inertia bolt 59 moves forwardly into recess 62 and the 'shutter is thus locked in this position, with the fulminate charge 53A in position to be ignited by a flame from the flash powder charge 47.
Upon impact of the nose Vof the projecpin carrying block 16 flies forwardly and the firing pin 23 fires the primer 22. If the point of the firing pin pierces the wall'of the primer, gas will have a tendency t0 escape rearwardly and to prevent this the firing pin provided Vwith interlocking Vflanges 66 andV 67 ing an impact fuse therein,

5. In a fuse, the combination of a body having a` head with an axial opening therein, a chamber inthe body communicating with the opening, a carrier member inthe forward portion of the chamberY and adapted to move therein, a primer atthe rear side ofsaid carrier member, a projection carried by the carrier member and extending through said opening, a second carrier member disposed inthe rearward portion of said chainber, and a firingpin at the forward side of the' second carrier member, said tiring pin and second carrier member being adapted to move forwardly in the chamber upon impact to engage the pin withthe primer.

13. In a. fuse, the combination of a head closing the carrier arranged at the forward portion of the bore, a firing pin carrier arranged at the rearward portion ofthe bore, a primer chargecarried at the rea-r side of the primer carrier and in alignment with the ring pin,
