Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOMER J. BLAKESLEE, OF CONCOBD TOWNSHIP, ERIE COUNTY, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS.
spwiloIl forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,741, dated September 8, 1874 application filed october 13, 1873.
To all whom it may conceh:
Be it known that I, HoMER J. BLAKESLEE, of Concord township, Erie county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Swing, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of `my invention consists in so constructing a swing `that the swinger can, whilefseated in the swing, comfortably and easily propelthe swing by simply changing his position, so as to change the point of pressure of his own Weight, or part of his own weight.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows: F F F is the frame, which is supported by braces or guys, as may be desired. D D are the pendent ropes or rods, and A is the seat. The lower ends of the pendants are bars B B, used as guides for the sliding hand-rests C C. kAttached to these hand-rests C C are ropes E, which are again attached to the uprights of the frame F at some point between the top and the middle of the same, and far enough below the crosspiece to act as a safety-cord by limiting the vibration of the rope D.
Now, as the ropes E are shorter than the ropes D, when the swing is moved the handrests C must move on the guides B; and when the swing is out of a perpendicular position any weight or power exerted on the short rope E will throw the swing back to a perpendicular quicker than the same Weight exerted on the long ropes D D, so that the operator, when swinging, by changing part of his weight onto the short ropes, will accelerate his downward motion.
The operator can accomplish this change of weight by or through his hands upon the handrests; or a device may be connected with thefw stantially as shown, and for the purposes men tioned.
HOMER J. BLAKESLEE. Witnesses:
