c. A. FURTAW BASKET BALL GOAL Fil ed Jan. 2, 1925 Elna-l- Patented July 28, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BASKET-BALL GOAL.
Application filed January 2, 1925. Serial No. 232.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. FURTAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basket-Ball Goals; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invent-ion aims to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive goal for use in playing basket ball, said goal being of new and improved construction in which all parts are electrically welded or otherwise welded together, so that they become a rigid unltary structure which cannot be broken and will not interfere with proper rolling of the ball from the rim of the goal, due to the absence of braces at opposite sides of said rim.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a goal constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view as indicated by line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a vertical metal bar adapted to be secured to a vertical support, for which purpose it is provided with openings 2, to receive appropriate fasteners. Extending across the upper portion of the bar 1 and also adapted to be secured to the vertical support, is a horizontal bar 3 whose central portion is welded as indicated at 4, to said vertical bar. The central portion of the bar 8 is preferably laterally offset as indicated at 5, to receive the bar 1 and permit the rear sides of these bars to lie in the same plane for flat contact with the support. A short horizontal arm 6 projects from the crossing point of the bars 1 and 3 and is disposed at right angles to the plane of said bars, the inner end of the arm 6 being welded at 7 to the offset portion 5 of the bar 3, while the outer end of said arm 6 is similarly welded at 8 to a horizontal ring 9, from which the usual net 10 may depend. The arm 6 is preferably formed of a short piece of piping, and the ring 9 may be formed of the same material, the welding 8 serving not only to join the ring and the arm, but acting also to connect the ends of the ring-forming pipe.
An inclined brace 11 preferably formed of piping, is welded at its upper end to the ring 9 and arm 6, as indicated at 12, and the lower end of said brace is similarly Igvelded at 13 to the lower portion of the By employing the novel construction shown and described, a rigid one-piece goal is provided which cannot by any possibility be broken or bent in the ordinary playing of a game. Moreover, there are no lateral projections or braces disposed at such points on the rim of the goal as to interfere with proper rolling of the ball. Another advantageous characteristic is that the device may be easily and inexpensively manufactured and may hence be sold at a reasonable price.
As excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed, they may well be followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, minor changes may of course be made.
I claim A basket ball goal comprising a vertical bar adapted to be secured to a vertical support, a horizontal bar crossing the upper portion of said vertical bar and welded at its center thereto, said horizontal bar being also adapted for anchorage to the support, a short horizontal arm welded to one of the aforesaid bars at the crossing point of said bars and projecting at right anglesfrom the plane of said bars, a continuous horizontal ring welded to the outer end of said arm, and an inclined .brace whose upper end is welded to the arm' and ring at the point of connection between said arm and ring, the lower end of said brace being welded to said vertical bar.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
