WEBSTER L. DIEHL, OF KING CITY, MISSOURI.
DISPLAY ATTACHMENT FOB CONTAINERS.
Application filed July 15, 1924. Serial No. 726,117.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VEBsTnn L. DIEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at King City, in the county of Gentry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Attachments for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has more especial reference to a display attachment to be hingedly connected to a box or container and embodying two connected members one of which constitutes a transparent cover or lid for the box or container, through which the contents are displayed while protected against atmospheric influences, and the other of which members provides a framing ade quate to carry and display, an effective advertising device relating, for example, to the articles contained in and to be vended from the box or container, cigars, for instance.
The ultimate purpose accomplished by the present invention is the provision of an attachment of the type stated which will be characterized severally by its strength and durability; by the facility it affords for a hinged'connection with the box or container including the freedom with which it may be applied or removed without any loss of time in its application or removal; and also by the facility it afiords for an effective and attractive display of advertising matter relating to the goods displayed by and vended from the box.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating certain preferred embodiments of the invention, and in which drawings similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views i Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a'container having my improved attachment applied to the hinged lid thereof, showing in full lines the position of the parts when the box is closed by the supplemental cover and in dotted outlines the position of the parts when the supplemental cover is partially raised but sufficiently to give, access to the interior of the container.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the box lid and the attachment and the upper part of the container.
Figs. 3 and 4: are perspective views of the attachment without the container, showing slightly different embodiments of the invention.
I have illustrated and will hereinafter debe understood that the attachment may be applied to containers whose lids are not hinged and are entirely removed when the attachment is in use on the container, merely by providing the attachment with a suitable means to connect it hingedly to the body of the container or by providing the container with a suitable means to attach the attachment hingedly thereto, without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by appended claims.
A designates which may be of any ordinary or approved size and construction and A designates the hinged lid thereof.
The attachment which constitutes the present invention comprises two frames, marked C and D, respectively, rigidly secured together at a suitable angle with each other by a transverse member E.
the body of a container The frame C carries a transparent member F, preferably of plate glass, which serves as the cover for the box when the attachment is applied, and comprises side members 0 and a front member 0 arranged to form a frame which is closed at its sides and front and open at its rear. Each of these memhers is of channel form in cross section, each comprising upper flanges 10 and lower flanges 11 spaced from each other to receive an edge of the supplemental cover F between them.- This cover member F is inserted into the frame C through the open rear side of the latter and is slid to its operative position in the frame, with its forward edge in the channel of the front member and its side edges in the channels of the side members of the frame. It is not necessary that it be secured in place by putty or any means other than the frame itself.
The frame D comprises two longitudinal members (1 and a suitable transverse member. Each longitudinal member is of channel form in cross section, comprising forward flanges 12 and rear flanges 13. The transverse member may be of similar channeled form, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, in which it is marked cl, or it may be a fiat bar or'strip as shownat (Z in Fig. l.
When ofchannel form, it is mounted at the top of the frame and connects the upper extremities of the side members (5 with each other, and when of the form shown at al it may be mounted at any --suitable place along the length of the frame, but preferably near the top thereof, and is secured at its opposite ends to the surfaces of the flanges 13 of the side members (Z (Z. The construction first described provides a frame which is closed along its sides and top and open along its bottom: while the other con struction (Fig. 4) provides a frame which is closed along its sides and open at its top and bottom. In both forms, the transverse members ((Z, al acts as a brace which holds the side members in proper relative position and adds rigidity to the frame.
The member E hereinbefore referred to is of suitable angular form in cross section, comprising two webs or limbs 14 and 15. The web or limb 14 is secured at its opposite ends to the upper flanges 10 of the side members 0 0 of the frame C; while the web or limb 15 is secured at its opposite ends to the front faces 12 of the side members 01 d of the frame D. This member acts as a brace for the rear end of the frame C and lower end of the frame D and secures the two frames together into a unitary structure. It will be noted that it is mounted above the frame C and at the front of the frame I) and hence does not interfere with the free insertion of the supplemental cove-r F into the frame C or its removal from said frame, or interfere with the application of the member D to or its removal from the lid A, or the free insertion or removal of the other elements which are to be mounted in said member D.
These other elements preferably include a card G containing appropriate matter of advertising or other nature and a transparent plate H mounted in front of and protecting the card G as well as increasing the attractiveness of the display of said matter and giving strength and rigidity to the lid It will be understood that the parts are assembled by inserting the plate F into the frame C from the rear end of the latter and that the plate H is inserted into the frame D from the bottom of the latter, there being no obstruction to the free entry of the plates into the respective frames at the place where these two ends of the frame meet each other. lVhen the parts of the attachment have been assembled the plate H rests with its bottom edge on the rear end of the plate F.
The attachment may then be quickly applied to the lid A by inserting the lower end of its frame upon the lid at the upper corners of the latter and then pressing it to its place lengthwise of the lid, with its lower end at the bottom of the lid. When thus applied, the frame F will be so located that when the lid is in the raised position shown the supplemental cover will rest upon the body of the box and close the same against atmosphere influences while displaying the contents thereof; and the frame D will stand in a substantially upright position with the lid A, with the advertising matter on the card G attractively displayed through and protected by the plate H. It will be apparent that the attachment may be swung to open and close the boX and that its swinging movement is with the lid and about the axis of the hinge or hinges which connect the lid to the body of the boX.
It will be noticed that the frame D has long bearings upon the lid A and together with the transverse members E and d, or (Z give stiffness to the lid: and further that the plate H which is co-extensive with the lid protects the latter against all liability of breakage under any strain imposed thereon in opening and closing the supplemental cover. In fact, it will be noticed that without this plate H. the weight of the parts of the attachment in opening and closing the box is so distributed by reason of the length of the frame D and its engagement with the lid that there is slight liability of breakage of the lid, even when the latter is made of flimsy material as is usual in the case of cigar boxes, and moreover, it will be noticed that the length of the frame D affords op portunity for a very attractive and effec tive card of advertising or other nature, which, of course, may be changed as is necessary or desirable. It will, of course, be apparent that the display card may be omitted and the transparent member H used to expose the label, if there be one, on the lid and it will also be apparent that the display card may be used without said transparent member and further that both the transparent member referred to and the display card may be omitted; but I greatly prefer to use the transparent member, whet-her the display card is used or not, in part because of the additional strength which said member imparts to the lid. Finally, I would have it understood as already suggested that if the container to which the attachment is applied be one unprovided with a hinged lid, the attachment may be applied to the container by any suitable means of a pivotal o 1 nature, preferably connected to its member E and being of a kind which permits ready application and removal of the attachment.
I will have it understood that other changes in details may be made without departingfrom the spirit of the inventlon as defined by appended claims.
Having thus described the inventlon, what I be ieve to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
