UNITED STATES PATENT. QFFICE.
JOHN ROYSE, or Donn orrv, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,718, dated September 1, 1874; application filed July 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RQYSE, of Dodd City, in the county of Fannin and State of tion and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, and specifically indicated in the claim.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved rein-holder. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, and Fig. 3 is a plan View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the stationary jaw, whiehis formed on the upper side of the block B, having a groove, G, along the under side to fit on the edge of the front end-board or the dash board of a wagon-box, to be fastened thereto by screws or rivets through the flanges D. E represents the movable jaw, which is pivoted to the block at F, to' swing toward and from the stationary jaw A, the block having a flange,
G, projecting over a portion of the shank of the jaw near the pivot, to keep it firmly in place and j to confine a spring, H, arranged to press the movable jaw against the reins I between the two jaws. J is a knob-stud, attached to the movable jaw for a handle, by which to open it for adjusting the reins. The two jaws are curved on corresponding or parallel lines, so that they bite the reins at every point between their opposing faces. The horizontal arrangement of the movable jaw economizes space, and conduces to strength, in that no vertical arm or pivoted support for the jaw is required, which has been an objection to this class of rein-holders hitherto. The spring is likewise fully protected from injury in this device, while its function is unimpeded.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The rein-holder formed of the block 13, havin g curved fixed jaw A and flange G, the spiral spring H, and the horizontal jaw E, pivoted at F, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
' JOHN ROYSE.
