Description

JulyZl, 1925.
Filed April 1 5, 1924 E. CRAWLEY RUNNING BOARD FOR AUTOMOBILES INVENTOR ./'DGHR CRHWLEY JMW@ A TTORNE YS Patented July 21, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUNNING BOARD FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed April 15, 1924. Serial No. 706,766.
T all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR CRAWLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Uncasville, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut,
have invented a new and Improved Running Board for Automobiles, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a running board for automobiles and has for its general object to provide a running board that will aff-ord ample escape for water and dirt and which at the same time will prevent the toe of a person stepping on the board from marring the sides of the body.
The nature of my invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part 4of this specilication, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of my invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a running board embodying my invention;
Figure V2 is a front view thereof;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3 3, Figure l;
Figure 4 is a cross section on the line 1 -4,
Figure 1.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, the runnin board is made with a series of panels 10 orming the tread surface of the board.
Between the panels are transverse slots 11 and the side edges of the panel at the slots 11 flare upwardly as indicated at 12, Figure 3. In addition to the transverse slots 11 longitudinal slots 13 are formed in the running board at the front and back of the 40 panel, the edges at the sides of the slots being fiared as indicated at 14C.
The front longitudinal slots 13 produce scraper members 15 at the outer sides of the slots and along the front of each panel. Thus, ones shoes may be effectively scraped before stepping on the panel.
The slots 1l and 13 also afford ready escape for dirt and water, preventing the same from collecting on the running board. In o-rder toprevent the t-oes of the shoes from marring the body I provide on the running board at the back edge upwardly extending stop flanges 16 preferably rising obliquely from the plane of the running board as best seen in Figure 4. Y
I would state in conclusion that while4 the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.. k
Having thus described my invention, I claim: I
As an article of manufacture, a running board having a longitudinal series of imper forate panels, and transverse drainage slots between adjacent panels as well as longitudinal drainage slots at both the back and front of each panel, said slots so disposed relatively to the imperforate panels that water may flow from the panels in either direction to find escape through one or other of the said slots.
EDGAR CRAWLEY.
