Description

July 21, 1925.
F. GIRARD ADAPTER FOR SURGICAL LAMPS Filed Dec. 28, 1921 M MIM/o: 5m 5M Patented July 21, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRITZ GIRARD, O'F HANAU-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM: QUARZ LAMPEN-GESELLSCHAFT MIT BESCHRENKTER HAFT MAIN, GERMANY.
ADAPTER FOR SURGICAL LAMPS.
Application filed December 28, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRITZ GIRARD, a German citizen, residing at Hanau-on-theMain, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adapters for Surgical Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to surgical lamps an d more particularly to the arrangement of quartz or rock crystal rods in such lamps, such rod replacing the quartz disc mounted as a rule in an opening of the metal casing of the lamp and being used for exposing cavities of the human body to radiation from within. These rods when rigidly secured to the lamp, are liable to break off. In order to obviate this, I secure the quartz or other rod in the light-conducting tube of the lamp, with a clearance between the tube and the rod, resilient means such as a coiled wire being provided for holding the rod. Preferably, part of the coiled wire closely surrounds the rod while another part is distanced apart therefrom and serves for securing it in the light-conducting tube.
In the drawings affixed to this specification and forming part thereof, a device embodying my invention is illustrated diagrammatically by way of example. In the drawings F 1 is a longitudinal section and Fig. 2 a bottom plan view, of a lamp lid formed as a holder for the quartz or rock crystal rod.
Referring to the drawings, a is the quartz rod secured to the light-conducting tube 5 of comparatively large diameter by means of a coiled wire 7), e, (Z. The inner diameter of the upper end I) of the coil is rather small and the rod or is forced into this end so as to be held securely therein. The lower part d of the coil is wider and is inserted in the metal casing of the lamp or in the tube 0 by turning it in the direction of winding of the coil so that it is firmly held in the tube or casing e. The parts 6 and d are connected by a conical portion 0 which permits a slight bending of the quartz rod. Preferably the windings of the coil 6, c, d are Serial No. 525,319.
in close contact with one another so that no light can pass between them. In order to still more effectively prevent any undesirable emission of light, an internally polished conical reflector f is provided in the casing or tube 6. The reflector loosely surrounds the lower end of the rod a and ofl'ers the further advantage of increasing by reflection the amount of effective light emitted into the quartz rod.
In order to be able to reduce the large light emitting opening formed by the comparatively wide tube or casing e, I provide near the lower end of the tube 6 an adjustablc diaphragm with a plurality of openings of different diameters, whereby the emission ot light can be regulated. In the example,
shown it is a disc provided with openings m, a and adapted to be rotated about a pin 9 by means of a lever i. A light filter k may be inserted in one of the openings.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. Adapter for surgical lamps comprising a light-conducting tube, a light conducting rod and a coiled wire inserted in said tube and serving to resiliently secure therein said light-conducting rod.
2. Adapter for surgical lamps comprising a light-conducting tube, a light conducting rod and a coiled wire inserted in said tube and serving to resiliently secure therein said light-conducting rod, part of said coiled wire closely surrounding the rod, while another part is distanced apart therefrom and fits in said tube.
3. Adapter for surgical lamps comprising a light-conducting tube, a light conducting rod, a coiled wire inserted in said tube and serving to resiliently secure therein said light-conducting rod and a conical reflector in the inner part of said coiled wir loosely surrounding the rod.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
FRITZ GIRARD.
