SAIVLUEL J. llVAClLASCHEK, (Il' NEWT YORK, N. Y.
OLTHESLIUE GONNECTIOINL Application. filedV April 9, 1925, Serial No. 1,857
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUnL d. TWALA sonnig, a citizen et the United States, residing at New York, in the county ot Broni; and State of' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesline Connections, o't which the tollowing)` is a specilication.
The present invention appertains to a device for holding the endsot clothes lines or the like together, and has tor its principal object to provide an eiicient and effective device ot this nature, which is useful in replacing the lines Vot the endless clothes line and pulley structure used in tenement and apartment houses.
It is desirable, 'from time to time, to replace the clothes line, in order that it may be washed, and it the ends are tied together, it 'is often very diilicult not only to untie the knot, but to thread a new clothes line through the pulley.
llt is the aim of the present device to provide a structure which will eiiiciently hold the ends ot the clothes line together, and which will aid in replacing the clothes line.
Another important object ot the invention is to provide a connection ot this nature, which will easily pass over the wheels oi the pulley structure.
Another important object ot the invention is to provide a connection oil this nature,
4which is flexible, strong, durable, easy to attach and detach, thoroughly reliable, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise wel] adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
' l/Vith the above and numerous other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel 'features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement ot parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation, showingan endless clothes line structure., with my improved device associated therewith.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view oli the device, showing a portion in section,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one oit the engaging clamps, and
Figure d is a detail perspective view of a modification of one of the engaging clamps.
Referring; to the drawing in detail, it
trained over the pulley structures C and D Y and the ends thereof are held together by my improved connection, indicated generally by the letter F. l
Referringl particularly to Figures 2 and 3, the specific construction of this connection l? will be. more clearly understood. The numeral 5 designates a chain section, including; a plurality of connected links, and a plurality of anti-friction spherical members 6, one on each link of the chain section. Cylinders 'l have their closed ends 8 attached to the end links. rlhe open ends ot the cylinder 7 are threaded, as at 9, for the reception ot cylindrical caps l0, the outer surfaces ci which are milled, and the ends oit which are provided with restricted openings formed by the inturned annular iianges 11. A ll-shaped resilient clamp member l2, havingI its terminals inturned to term blades 13 is engaged with each end of the clothes line, las shown in Figure 2, the blades 13 bitingl into the line. After these clamp members 12 have been engaged 'over the ends ot the clothes line, the cylinders 7 are passed over the clamp members, thus retaining` the blades 13 in engagement with the line. ylilhe caps 10, which have been previously slipped over the ends of the line are then threaded on the cylinder, until the inturned flanges 'l1 abut the ends oi' the clamp. rlihis connection will then function as an integral part of the clothes line.
li it is desired to substitute another clothes line, one of the caps 10 will be unscrewed, and the respective cylinder 7 pulled off of the respective clamp member and then said clamp member may be removed and the cap also removed from the line. An end of another clothes line will be attached with the parts just removed and by pulling on the vfree end of the old clothes line, the new clothes line may be trained over the pulley structures C and l), and finally, the other end of the new clothes line may be attached to the connection in the usual manner.
By referring particularly to Figure l of the drawing, it will be seen. that I have disclosed a modification of one of the engaging clamps, which comprises a pair of elongated sides 15 having their extremities turned toward each other to form sheets 16. Extensions l? are disposed between the sides 15, beginning at their point of juncture and terminating intermediate their ends` Thus, the end of the rope will be received between the sides 15 and the extensions 17.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages o1"- the invention. Will now be clearly understood, Without a more detailed description thereof.
It will be apparent that the device is useful in numerous other Ways than that outlined above, and that numerous changes in the details oi construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, Without departing from the 20 spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed, or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new is:
clothes line engaging member including a cylinder having one end closed, and the other end opened, said cylinder provided with external threads adjacent its open ends, a U-shaped resilient clamp receivable in the cylinder, with its intermediate portion adjacent the closed end, the ends of the clamp members being inturned to 'form blades, and a cap threaded over the open end of the cylinder and provided with an inturned annular Hange or engaging the ends o'i the clamp member to retain it in the cylinder, When said clamp member is engaged with the end of a rope or the like.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
SAMUEL J. VALSCHEK.
