00., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS" 1 ROAD-ROLLER-ENGINE MOUNTING. r
Application filed April 28,1923. Serial No. 635,205.
To all whom it may concern," f Y Be it known that I, FRANK'S; DAVIS, 'a citizen of the United States, residing at Homewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have'invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Road- Roller-Engine Mountings, of which-the following is a specification. v
This invention relates toheavy engine driven road ro-llersused for working inthe streets. In a machine of thisclas's, there is always a front roller mechanism" rotatable upon a vertical pivot sustained by a sort of a yoke at the front of arelatively wide frame supported at its rear by one or more rollers and carrying in front of the rear roller an engine for propelling the entire machine.
The space for the engine of such a machine is comparatively limited and it is, therefore, exceedingly difficult to do machine work or the like in preparation for the engine after the road roller' frame is assembled.
The object of this invention is to provide a frame construction and particularly a rigid spacing engine carrying base member interpositioned between the frame'side members of such a character that it carries substantially all shaft bearings, etc, necessary for the reception of the engine-this so that all machine work on such parts necessary for the engine can be done upon this spacing or base member before the road roller frame is assembled, thus insuring perfect alignment of all bearings for each given shaft of the engine.
The invention consists in mechanism capable of attaining the foregoing objects; which can be easily and cheaply made, which is satisfactory in use and is not readily liable to get out of order.
More particularly, the invention consists in numerous features and details of con struction which will be hereafter more fully set forth in the specification and claim.
Referring to the drawings in which like numerals designate the same parts throughoiit the several views 2;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a complete road roller equipped with the mechanism of this invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse side view taken Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on'the line of Figure 1. I
Figure 4 is a plan view'taken'on the irregular line 44 of Figure :1. i I
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the .frame mechanism without the engine applied thereto, taken from therear of Figure 1 or from the top of Figure 4.
The drawings show a conventional form of two"wheel roller mounted upon a rear roller 10 and a front roller 1 2,'the latter ournaled on a horizontal axisiat 14, adapted for rotation on a vertical-axis 1-6 in an arched yoke 18 carried by two Widely'separated side members 20 and 22 passing across opposite ends of the roller 10, said side members carrying at their rear a conventional form of Water tank 24 placed above a separating cross-member 26, not entering into this invention. These side members 20 and 22 are sustained from the shaft 28 of roller10 by suitable bearings 30 and 32, the former attached directly to side member 22, as shown in Figures 4 and 5.
Interposed between side members, 20 and 22, and preferably immediately adjacent to the yoke 18, is a spreader engine base casting 34 filling the longitudinal space between said members 20 and 22 and having an L- shaped extension 36 extending down one side member, as 20, beyond shaft bracket 32 which it carries, as clearly shown in Figure 5.
Rising from the main body portion 34 of this Lshaped base are a plurality-in the particular case here illustrated three shaft supports 3840 and 42 affording aligned bearings 44 for the main drive shaft 46 of the conventional form of engine mechanism 48 indicated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, said shaft 46 carrying between bearing supports 40 and 42 conventional reversing gear mechanism 5052 and 54 not entering in detail into this invention and carrying between bearing supports 38 and 40 conventional form of changed speed gear mechanism 56- 58, two of whose gears 60 and 62 are mounted upon a shaft 64, journaled in shaft bearing brackets 66 on member 34 and 68 on member 36. The engine base member 34 is provided with such vertically disposed perforations 70 as may be necessary for the reception of bolts 72 which hold the engine 48 in proper position to renderit an operative structure in CODIIGCtiOIl with the shafts 46 and (i and their attached mechanisms heretofore described. ShaftiBakcarriessujtable gears 74, meshing with an annular gear 76, carried by roller shaft 28 andtherefore capable-of propelling-rear roller 10.
