Be it known that I, JOHN 'A.M KINNEY, a citizen. of the United-States, andresident of La Junta, int-he county of Qtero andState of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typesetting -Ma chines, of which I the following isas'pecificw tion.
My. present invention relates to improvementsin typesetting machines of the linotype class wherein matricesgandspacers are assembled into a line by the-manipulation of the-keyboarchand' the assembled line is thenraised by an.-.elevator to a line delivery carriage. Kr
The object of the invention 1s to provide a simple and economical device capable of ready attachment to existing machines by which the elevator .may be raised by power instead of manually as is customary, such power means beingreleased by a'readily movable element within convenient reach of the'hand of the operator ad acentthekeyboard. y

Pivotally secured to the rear end ofthe upper wall 11 (see Fig. 2) is an arm 13 which extends rearwardly and underlies an arm l l-carried-ibyshaft'Z. Pivoted to the front wallgofcarrying member 11 is a dog operating arm or lever 20 (shown in detail in Fig. 8) which has a dog engaging part or shoulder 20 and an angular turned part 20 which is provided with an eye into which is hooked or inserted thev angular turned end of a pull rod 21. This-pull rod has attached'at its other end a slide member 21 (Figs. 3 and 11) conveniently in the form vofa curved plate member orclip 21 which is adapted to slidingly engage the shaft 3, said member 21 carrying a button or projection 21? adapted to be pressed by the hand of the operator to withdraw the dog from engagement with lever arm 15".
From the foregoing description, it is be lieved the operation of my device or attach ment willv be clear, but itfmay be briefly stated asfollowsr With the elevator in its lowered position, the arm Gwill be at the extremity of its right hand movement (to the right Fig. 1) and the arm 14 will be held depressed and bearing against the upper side ofthe lever arm 13, and, the lever arm 15 being held by the dog,
tension is placed on spring13 Supposing now the line of type to have been set and it being desired to raise the elevator, the operator by a momentary lateral pressure on the button, disengages the dog from lever I arm 15, whereupon the spring 13 immediately raises the elevatorby rocking the twoarm lever 15 and 15?, theroller 17 effecting the lifting by bearing upwardly against the under side of arm of lever 3". Thereonthe movement of arm or lever 6'to the left in the movement of the line delivery carriage raises the arm 14 from off the arm 13 whereby the tension on the spring 13 is relieved allowing lever arm 15 to drop until it is reengaged by the do. Movement of carriage shift lever to the right (Fig. 1) again places tension on the spring 13 and the parts are positioned ready for the next elevating operation.
It will beunderstood that my invention is not limited to any particular form of machine, as it is applicable to various makes, among which may be mentioned the Intertype, the Linotype, and the International. It will be further understood that my invention is not limited to the precise construction of parts disclosed, as various changes therein may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. 1" I Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: r Q
1. In amachine of the class described, the combination with the carriage operating lever and elevator raising lever, of an arm pivoted to a fixed part of the machine, an arm secured to said carriage operating lever and overlying said first named arm, a twoarmedrlever fulcrumed on said fixed. support, having one arm extendingabove said second arm, a spring connecting said last named arms, the other arm of said two armed lever having a part engaging the ele vator operating lever, and manually controlled means for locking said two-armed lever against movement.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination, with theq carriage operating lever and elevator raising lever, of an arm pivoted to a fixed part of the machine, an arm secured to said carriage. operating lever and overlying said. first named arm, a twoarmed lever fulcrumed on said fixed support, having .one. arm extending above said second arm, a spring connecting said last named arms, theother arm of said twoarmed lever having a part engaging the elevatorpperating lever, and ,manually controlledmeans for locking said two-armed lever, saidmeans comprising a spring actuated dog for engaging said two-armed lever, andv manually controlled means for actuating said dog. i
. 3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with the carriage operating lever and elevator raising lever, of a supplemental' lever articulated on a fixed plvot,
and having a part for engagingsaid elevating lever, momentarily releasable means for locking said supplemental lever against movement, a spring foractuatingsaid supplemental lever, and means whereby the movement of said carriage operating lever alternately stores, power in and releases said spring. i
4. In a machine of thecharacter described, the combination with the carriage operating lever and elevator raising lever, of a supplemental lever articulated on a fixed pivot, and having a part for engaging said elevating lever, momentarily releasable .means for locking said supplemental lever against movement, a spring for actuating said supplemental lever, and means whereby the movement of said carriage operating lever alternately stores power 11 and releases said spring, said means comprising a lever arm articulated below said supplemental lever, and connected thereto by said spring, and an arm connected With said carriage operating lever and overlying said lever arm.
5. The apparatus of claim 4: in Which the overlying arm has a double hooked portion adapted to be merely hooked around the carriage operating arm and its actuat-' ing shaft.
6. Apparatus according to claim 4, in which the two-armed lever and lever arm and controlling dog are supported on a carrier member adapted to be bolted to a frame part adjacent the keyboard.
7 Apparatus according to claim 4, in Which the manually controlled locking eomprises a spring pressed dog, a dog releasing lever, and a pull rod connected to said dog releasing lever, said pull rod having a part to slidably clip on the shaft of the elevator raising lever in front of the keyboard, and having a hand engaging rojeetion.
