GEORGE cLAusme, or roarsnouibrnomo, Assienoa PAVNY, or PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, ACORPORATION or orno.
Application filedNbvember 245 1923. Serial No. 676,690.
To all whom it may concern:
"Be it known thatI, GEORGE CLAUSING, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented-certain new the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. f "Myfinvention relates to-lasts. x
It is the obj ect of my invention to provide a last consisting of a toe and heel portion hinged to one another so that the respective portions will remain in either their col- 16 lapsed or extended positions due to the resilient character of the medium of the last is made.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a last in which the parts willhave a i which fixed relationship to one another and also 95 necting the'two parts to one another of such a character that said connecting means 'w1ll pass over a dead center whenthe last halves are moved from closed toextended position. or vice versa.
In particular, it is my object to provide a. last with a collapsible toe part which will act as a yielding member for maintaining the toe and heel parts in their respective positions.
Referring tothe drawings: I
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the completed last in expanded position.
Fig. 2 is a section through the last in a similar position.
Fig. 3 shows the toe portion of the last when in collapsed position illustrating how the flexible tongue of the last is brought nearer the sole portion of the last when the last is in collapsed position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the last.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the last.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 1 looking towards the rear of the last.
Fig. 7 is a section on the same line looking towards the toe of the last.
Referring to the drawings in detail:
The last consists of a heel portion 1 of suitable configuration. This heel portion has a forwardly and downwardly tapering surface/2 which terminates at 3' in a semicircular projection 4L, constituting one portion of the joint between the last. Below this semicircular portion 4, which has a relatively flat top 5, is a verticalportion 6.
The'rear face of. the toe portion of the last, which portion is designated ,7, has a similarvertical face 8; a concave portion 9, and an extended tapering aperture 10-, which extends jfrom the joint adjacent the 1 hinge of the last to apoint adjacent the-toe as at 11. The toe is designated 12.
For the purpose of description, the lower portion of the toe part of the last is designated 13 and known as the sole portion, while the upper part of the last, which is separated from. the-sole portion, is designated 14 and is known as the tongue.
The rear portion of the tongue is vertical as at 15, so that its face together with the face 2 forms thewalls bf a substantially triangular gap between the heel and toe portion'of the last toof the last parts. I Y
In order to hold the last halves together about the hinge there are provided a pair of links. These links are designated 16 and consist ofa. cup shaped middle portion 17 permit of the collapsing To THEvuLciin LAST ooM- and flaten'ed eyes 18.'- This gives strength to the links while it is easier to drill the holes 19 for the reception of the pins 20 and-21 which are respectively located in thetoe and heel portions of the last. These links are mounted on the pins 2-0 and 21. The toe and heel portions are allowed some freedom of movement about the hinge with respect to the linksor link by reason of the cutaway portions 22 and 23 in the respective halves of the last, said cutaway portions communieating with one another.
In theupper tongue portion of the toe part of the last is provided an aperture 24 for the reception ofthe end of the pin 25 which is carried by the heel portion. The
margin of the opening 24: is surrounded by a metal washer 26 to give strength to that part of the last upon which considerable tongue portion closer to the toe portion part of the last. The link 16 will pass over thedead center.
It will be observed that it is customary to make such lasts of wood which have a certain resiliency so that this arrangement permits of the last being collapsed or expanded and the last remaining in either position firmly without further care on the part of tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a last, a toe portion, a heel portion, a hinge therebetween, a link connecting said portions to one another about said hinge, said toe portion of the last being sub stantially divided into two parts adapted to be broughtyieldingly towards'one another, means separate from the; hinge and link carried by the heel portion of thelast adapted to engage the yielding portion of the toe part of the last in sliding engagementtherewith, there being means in said toe portion of the last to accommodate and engage said first mentioned means, whereby when the last is collapsed the respective-parts of the toe portion will be brought adjacent to one another and when the last is expanded said respective parts will be moved from one another.
2'. In a last, a toe portion, a heel portion, a hinge therebetween, a link connecting said portions to one another about said hinge, said toeportion of the last being substan- 'tially; divided into two parts adapted to be brought yieldingly towards one another, a. pin carried by the heel portion of the last adapted to be inserted in the yielding portion of the toe part of the last in sliding engagement therewith, said toe portion of the last being formed to accommodate said pin, whereby when the last is collapsed the away portion, a semicircular projection on the heel portion engaging with a semicircular concavity in the toe portion to form a joint, a vertical face. on. both the toe and heel portions beneath said joint, a vertical face onthe toe portion above said joint, a spaced rearwardly upwardly extending face 011 the heel portion above the joint, a link connecting said heel and toe portions locatedin'the cutaway portion in said last, pins in each portion of said last for supporting said link, and means carried by the heel portion for engaging with a part of the toe portion, said part of the toe portion being adapted to yieldingly collapse and. return to its expanded position when the last is collapsed or expanded, 'said link consisting of a pair of members having bodies arcuate in cross section and flattened ends with eyes in said ends for mounting upon said pins.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa ture,
GEORGE GLAUSING.
