T 0 all to 710m it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST A. LLEWELLYN, a citizen of the Dominion of- Canada, and subject of the Kin of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at lVilton, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moccasins; and I do liereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to boots and-shoes which are made usually of soft leather, and more particularly to moccasins or the like.

The main objects of the invention areto provide a moccasin having a toe-piece made wide at the front and provided with-a narrow tongue like rear part which extends'up over the ball of the foot and is secured to the vamp or front upper part of the shoe by seams which extend near the medial line of the foot, on opposite sides of-said line, while the widened front part is secured over the toe portion of the shoe by a seam which extends in a continuous curve from a point at one side about the base of the large toe to a diametrically opposite point: on the other side; the several parts of the shoe being so formed and secured together by seams so arranged as to give increased strength where needed and secure ease and comfort to the wearer and reduce to a minimum the danger of ripping or being torn apart at the seams.

The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the descript-ion.. V i

Referring to said drawings, in which'the same reference letters are used to denote corresponding parts in different views, the frontpart of the'shoe or moccasin, as shown in Fig. 1, is formed from a blank A, con sisting of a single piece of leather having a centrally disposed V cut therein or an approximately V-shaped portion cut-out, as at a, the front edge thereof being continuously curved from a point at one side nearly midway of the blank to a diametrically opposite point on the other side, and also havingon opposite sides thereof laterally'pro j ecting extensions or wings a with'straight edges, and rearwardly projecting. portions (4 having curved edges; said blank being adapted to be bent on the lines w,fFig. 6,

and given'the form indicated in Fig. 1, and

As shown, a tongue 'is secured to the vamp b a transverse over the ball of the oot and lies preferably over the rear part of the toe-piece, asshown in lyand 8, but may underlie said rear partof the toe-piece, as shown lin F' and may have secured thereto gussets fil, the outer edges of which are secured to the quarters F, but the gussets are not essentialand may be omitted. The rearwardly extending portions of the blank preferably terminate atthe shank of the foot, as shown 1, but such portions maiy run to the heel, asshown in Fig. 8.

The upper end of the toe-piece B, as shown in Fig. 1, is round, while in Fig. 8, said end has a straight edge, and the seam which unites said end to the tongue .D extends straight across; otherwise the toe-piece and associated parts and the mode of connecting the same are the same as described with reference to Figs. 1 to 7 of the drawings.

Having thus described my. inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure 'by' Letters Patent of the United, States is:

a 1. In a moccasin, a front part or vamp made from a blank consisting of a single piece of leather bifurcated in its sole .portion and having on opposite sides thereof intermediate laterally projecting extensions or wings whose opposed edges extend a-lon a medial line over and forward of the b'al of the foot, the front edge of said front part being upturned and curved in substantially semi-circular form leaving an open space over the toes, and a toe-piece having fa wide front-portion adapted. to cove-r said open space andhaving its front edgecurved to conform to the curvature of-said upturned edge of said i 'ront part and secured thereto by asubs-tantially semi-circular seam, said toe-piece having a narrow-tongue-ilike portion which extends from said wide front part rearwardly over the ball of the foot and overlies the opposed edges of said Wing's, said narrow portion *being secured to said wings by sea-ms on oppositesides of said medial lines, and rear upper and sole portions secured to said win-gs and to the-sole portions I of said front part, substantially as described. the curved 2. 3. A moccasin comprising a front part or vamp made from a blank consisting of, a single piece of leather having a V-cut in its sole portion and having intermediate later ally projecting extensions or wings on opposite sides thereof which terminate in advance of the rear ends of the sole portions, the edges of said wings being straight, and the front edge of said vamp being continuously curved in approximately semi-circular form from one Wing to the other and upturned to leave an open space over the toes, the outel edgesof the said sole portions being curved from the rear edges of said wings to their rear extremities, a toe-piece having a wide front portion covering said open space, and the front edge of which is curved to conform to the curvature of said continuously curved front edge of said vamp, and a rearwardly extending narrow portion which extends from said wide front part rearwardly over the ball of the foot and is connected to said wings b seams which extend on opposite sides 0 near said line, so as to leave a space between said edges along said medial line, the front curved edges of said vamp and toe-piece being secured together by a substantially semi-circular seam and rear upper and sole portions secured to said wings and sole portions of said front part, substantially as de scribed.
