UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. SHELDON AND JOSEPH B. REYNOLDS, OF AUSTINVILLE, PENN- SYLVANIA; SAID SHELDON ASSIGNOR OF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE B.
SHERMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTVHES-POUNDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,524, dated August 25, 1874; application led May 29, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEO. A. SHELDON and J. B. REYNOLDS, of 'Austinvilla in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Washers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a clotheswasher, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will nowproceed to describe v its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a bottom view of our clotheswasher, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents a tube, of any suitable dimensions, which forms the handle of our clothes- The lower end of this tube is closed by a' concave perforated plate, B, and protected by means of a wire guard, C. Around the lower'end of the tube is secured a funnelshaped hood, D, which is braced and strengthcned by means of a horizontal plate, a., as shown particularly in Fig. 2. Inside of the tube or handle A is placed a rod, E, provided around its lower end with rubber or other suitable packing G, forming, as it were, a pum-pplunger. l
This washer is to be used in a tub or washer by placing the funnel or hood D over the clothes in the suds and working the plunger up and down to draw and force the water through the clothes, and it is to be changed from one place to another until the clothes are all washed. y
By the employment of this device there is no wear on the clothing, as the washing is all done by drawing and forcing a circulation of water to and fro through the clothes.
The wire guard O prevents the perforations n the plate B from becoming-clogged by the clothes.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the tubular handle A, provided with perforated plate B at its lower end, and the surrounding funnel D, of the interior plunger E G, all f substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we affix our signatures `in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. SHELDON. JOSEPH B. REYNOLDS. Witnesses:
L. B. SLADE, WARREN SMITH.
