N. K. DAVIS LEAF DISCHARGE AND OPERATING AND LQCKING MEANS THEREFOR Filed Sept. 27, 1924 Patented July 7, 1925.
NORRIS K. DAVIS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
LEAF DISCHARGE AND OPERATING AND LOCKING MEANS THEREFOR.
Application filed September 27, 1924. Serial No. 740,183.
To all whom it may comer Be it known that I, Noiuzrs K. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaf Discharge and Operating and Locking Means Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improvement in concrete mixers and especially to the means for operating the leaf discharge. Heretofore the leaf discharge had to be held in operative position by the attendant, otherwise the weight of the material falling upon the same, from the rotating mixing drum, would throw the leaf downward, and out of operative position.
The object of the present invention is to provide a means whereby the leaf on being manually placed in discharge position, is locked therein and so remains until the same is placed in inoperative position by said attendant.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, and set forth in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, size and minor details of construction Within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section through the mixing drum and a longitudinal section through the leaf discharge, showing the operating and locking means in elevation.
In the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, 1 indicates a frame upon which is mounted a conventional type of concrete mixer. Said mixer is operated by means of any suitable power device, such as is indicated at 2. The power so employed also operates the rotary mixing drum 3, the skip 4 being operated by suitable means comprising in part, the
.windlass 4 and cables 4', further details being omitted as forming no part of the present invention.
Carried by the frame 1 is the superstruc ture 5 upon which is mounted, by means 01 the bearings G, the horizontally disposed shaft 7, carrying at one of its ends the manually operated lever 8, and at the other end carrying a sprocket 9. In spaced relation upon the shaft 7 are connected one end of the toggles 1010, which connect at their opposite ends with a leaf discharge 12 at points 1111. Said leaf discharge is of the ordinary conventional type now in use at the present time, the greater portion of which extends into the interior of the rotary drum 3 through the discharge opening 13. Said leaf discharge is pivotally suspended at point 14 from a bracket 15 carried by the superstructure 5.
The toggles 10 and 10, due to their flexing, provide a locking means when the lever 8 is moved to throw the leaf discharge into and out of function.
011 the back of the superstructure 5, opposite to the sprocket 9, is mounted a horizontally disposed shaft 17, carrying at one of its ends a hand wheel 18, and at the other end carrying a sprocket 19. These two sprockets 9 and 19 are connected by a chain 20, thus providing a means whereby the leaf discharge may be operated if desired from the skip side of the machine.
To operate the device set forth in the drawings, the attendant throws the lever S downward, thus flexing the toggles 10 and 10 from their normal position to a downward position. This forces the inner end of the leaf discharge 12 upward Within the rotary drum, and the exposed end downward, thus placing the same in operative position. To return the leaf discharge to inoperative position the lever 8 is moved upward thus forcing the toggles to their normal position, which in turn forces the inner portion of said leaf discharge 12 downward, throwing the exposed end upward, thus rendering the same inoperative. It is to be understood that the lever 8 may be operated directly by the attendant; or if convenient, the operation may be effected from the skip side of the machine by means of the hand wheel 18 which through the chain 20 turns the sprocket 9 actuating the shaft 7.
To retain the lever 8 in raised position I provide a spring pressed roller or other means 21 carried by the frame 5 and disposed in the path of the lever 8. On the upward movement of the lever the same springs over the member 21, which retains the leaf in inoperative position. By providing a spring pressed member 21 I am enabled to operate the leaf discharge from either side of the apparatus.
I claim In a concrete mixer and in combination with its mixing drum and tiltable leaf discharge associated with said drum; means for operating said leaf discharge comprising a rock shaft on the front of the machine; toggles connecting said shaft with the leaf d'1s charge adapted to lock said leaf discharge in operative discharging position; a lever on one end of the rock shaft; a sprocket mounted on the other end; a hand Wheel at the back of said machine a power transmitting connection between said hand Wheel and said sprocket and a spring latch adapted for releasably holding the lever in its upper position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
NORRIS K. DAVIS.
