State of: New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chutes for Proportioning and Forwarding Materials, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings andthe characters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in chutes adaptedto be used for forwarding materials, such as ashes, lime, sand, broken stone, cement, gravel and similar materials,
and the structures for that purpose may be,
built sufiiciently large and strong to forward materials of that character; but the device may also be modified, decreased in size, and otherwise adapted to be utilized An exampleof my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1. is a View of one such slideway, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a plan of two such slideways joined to each other; Fig.

Theslideway B may be composed of" exterior side piece 1, and interior sidepiece 2, and a-floor 3, when the slideways, are made separately and bolted together as shown in Fig. 3; but the middle portion may be made of one solid piece as shown in Fig.1 4; 1 is a support forthe bearing of the shaft.

desired to fix it in place. The gates 11, 12, are so adjusted to the beams 6, 6, that when one of said gates is down and resting against the floor of the slideway, the other of such gates will be elevated, leaving the slideway at that part open. I j
The chute is tobe placed in position at a suitable angle asshown in Figs. 1 and 7, the upper part resting against an elevated place, such as a ceiling or other part, from which the material is to be discharged into the chute, and such place is so arranged by a suitable partition or division 40, that the materialentering one of the slideways will be separate from the material entering the other slideway, until it reaches the dis- 7 charging end of both. At the. discharging ends of the slideways a suitable hopper 22, is, provided, to receive the materials as they are discharged and lead them to a suitable mixing or other machine provided for their reception.
Inasmuch as the flow of the materials may be unequal, that is the material passing down one slideway may move more rapidly than that passingfldown the other, an additional gate 23, is provided, which has a rod 23 connecting it pivotally to a handle 25,
which handle 25 is pivotally supported on an upright 26, and extends across the chute, so that by means thereof. the gate 23, may bejraised and lowered as desired, to regulate 5 the quantity of material allowed to pass 7 into the slideway. The handle 25, where it impinges against the upright 27 is provided with holes and the upright 27 is provided with corresponding holes, and through these bymeans of a suitable pin or bolt,the gate 23, maybe held at any suitable elevation; Theslideway C is provided witha similar gate 24, having a rod 24? pivotally connectingit to a handle 28, which is pivoted to v the crosspiece 29, and is also provided'with holes corresponding to holes on the other side of the upright 27, and by means of such handlef28, the gate 24, may be raised and lowered, and heldin anyrdesired position by pinsor bolts inserted in the arm 28,
and the holes in the upright 27.
The method of operation is as follows: 1
The chute A is taken to the place where it is intended tobe used, and set up and supported at'the desired angle, the upper end adjusted to an opening in the floor or level above it, and a division or partition as 40, provided, by means of which the material to be forwarded and measured through one slideway will be kept separated from an- 7 other, untilthe quantity in-each slideway has been properly measured. As it may sometimes happen that the flow of the 'materials orsome of them is so r rapid in one or both of the slideways'as to overflow the lower end of the same, covers 30, 30, are provided, which are to be laid across the top edges of the slideways and held in place by rods 31, 31, passin through hasps 32, 32. Of course it will e understood that if desired the entire slidewaysi from end to end may be provided with such covers as 30, 30, laid across the top with recesses cut in them for adjustment to the portions projecting from the sides of the slideways, so that open, or partly open, or
entirely closed slideways may be employed.

While I have shown in these drawings and by the description of my invention, an arrangement of a chute consisting of two slideways, it will be obvious that several slideways may be prepared and bolted together, and the outer end of the shaft 5, suitably extended, and provided with bearing supports, and attachments to added working beams, similar to 6, 6, as may be desired. When only one such additional slideway is to be added, the shaft 5 would terminate, as shown in Fig. 2, resting upon the outer edge of the added slideway; but if two slideways should be added the arrangement shown for the clutches could be repeated upon the continued shaft 5, so that slideways three, or four, etc., could be used ton-ether or separately with two slideways as shown in Fig. 2. Gates similar to the gates 23, 24, with their pivoted handles and stopping devices could of course be provided a so by suitable uprights and a cross beam, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a chute, alternately opening and closing charge measuring gates mounted within the chute at a predetermined distance apart, and a gate arranged above the charge measuring gates to regulate the flow of material thereto.
2. The combination with a chute formed with separate slideways, a pair of alternately opening and closing charge measuring gates mounted in each slideway a predetermined distance apart, independent operating means for each pair of gates, and a clutch connection between the two independent operating means.
3. The combination with a chute formed with separate slideways, a pair of alternately opening and closing charge measuring gates mounted in each slideway a predetermined distance apart, means for simultaneously operating the charge measuring gates of the difierent slideways, and an independent gate mounted in each slideway above the charge measuring gates to regulate the flow of material to the latter.
4. The combination of a chute formed with separate slideways, a pair of charge measuring gates mountedin each slideway a predetermined distance apart, a shaft operatively' connected to each set of charge measuring gates for alternately opening and closingthe same, anda clutch. connection between/theshafts for. simultaneously operating all of the charge. measuring gates.
The combination with a chute, of a pair of spaced gates pivotally connected to the-bottom of the chute and foldable against the same when in an open position, and a working beam having the ends thereof 0peratively connected to the swinging ends of the gates for alternately opening and closing the same.
6. The combination with a chute formed with separate slideways which receive material from separate sources of supply and discharge simultaneously into a common receptacle, adjustable charge measuring gates within each of the slideways, and a gate arranged above the charge measuring gates to regulate the flow of material thereto, the charge measuring gates enabling the material received from the different sources to be discharged into the common receptacle in predetermined proportions.
7. The combination with a chute formed with separate slideways, a pair of alternately opening and closing charge measuring gates mounted in each slideway a predetermined distance apart, a working beam operatively connected to each pair of gates, shafts journaled upon the slideways and carrying the working beams, and a clutch connection between the shafts.
8. The combination with a chute formed with separate slideways which receive material from independent sources of supply and discharge into a common receptacle, a pair of charge measuring gates mounted in each slideway a predetermined distance apart, working beams operatively connected at their ends to the charge measuring gates for alternately opening and closing the same, 110 and means for locking the working beams to gether to obtain a simultaneous operation of the gates.
9. The combination with a chute, spaced charge measuring gates mounted within the 115 chute and pivotally connected to the bottom of the chute so as to be foldable against the same, a transverse shaft extending across the chute, a working beam carried by the transverse shaft, and link means be- 120 tween the ends of the working beam and the swinging ends of the respective charge measuring gates.
10. The combination with a chute formed with separate slideways which receive ma- 125 terial from independent sources of supply and discharge into a common receptacle,
a pair of alternately opening and closing charge measuring gates mounted in each slideway, the gates of each pair being ad- 130 justable toward and away from each other to the bottom of the chute and foldable to regulate the sizes of the respective against the same when in open position, and charges, and a clutch connection between means having a link connection with the 10 the two sets of gates whereby they may be swinging ends of the gates for alternately 5 independently or simultaneously operated. openlng and closing the same.
