Be it known that ANTHONY P. LA Rose, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Festus, in the county of Jefferson and State of Missouri, has invented certain new and f useful Improvements in Clothesline Pulleys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement vision of a pulley having a brake associated therewith which will readily grip and hold the line against movement, and which will readily release the line upon a slightpull of the brake releasing means.

It is a further objectof the invention to provide a pulley of the above mentioned characterwhich will permit ofthe tightening and releasing of the line without the usual knotting and twisting of the rope. A further object of the invention is the provision of a pulley of the above mentioned character constructed of few and simple parts, strong, durable, highly convenient in use and cheap to manufacture.

Other important objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Referring specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a housing for supporting a winding reel, such reel being shown in dotted lines as at 11. The reel may be provided with any suitable rewinding means, such as a weight 12, operating a cable 13 about a small pulley 14:, which is fixed upon the shaft of the reel, and turns therewith. It is therefore obvious that upon release of the clothes line, 15, the weight will cause the reel to wind such line thereon.

The reel 11 and its associated elements are merely shown to illustrate a single use of the pulley, and form no part of the invention to be hereinafter described and claimed.

The numeral 16 designates a pulley having a short shaft 17. This pulley is grooved as at 18 for engagement with th'eclothes line 15. Thenumerals 19 and 20 designate side bars, provided with openings 21 and 22 for engagement with the shaft 17. The

19 and 20 are positioned upon opposite sides of the pulley 16. The bar 20 is provided with an extension arm26 provided with an opening 27 at its outer end to be engaged with a linki28 of a chain or other flexible element 29. The chain 29 carries a ring 30 to be engaged by the finger of the operator when it is desired to release the brake means, to be described.

' This lever is shaped at its lower end to conform to thecurvature of the pulley 1,6 and is further grooved as at 33 for engagement 1 with the clothes line when it is passed about the pulley. The opposite end of the lever 31 is formed into a hook 34 for engagement with any suitable support, such as an eyelet 35, whereby the pulley will be held against displacement. The purpose in providing the arm 20 with a notch 24, is to permit of its being swung to a dotted line position whereby the operator will be enabled to remove or place the clothes line upon the pulley, without the necesity of pulling the entire line therethrough.

The operation of the device is as follows The line 15 is drawn from the reel 11 and passed over the pulley and under the brake lever 31. The line is then drawn as tight as desirable, and will be held in this position by the brake lever 31 due to the fact that any tendency of the line to move the pulley clockwise, causes the brake to frictionally engage the line, and force it tight against the pulley. It will be readily seen that the line will pass freely over the pulley in the direction of the arrow, but will be positively held against movement in the other direction, unless released by the releasing means.

It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred one, but that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described the combination with a pulley, of a mounting therefor, a brake bar engaged with the mounting, a supporting element carried by the brake bar, a brake shoe carried by the brake bar for engaginga line passed about the pulley, and means carried by the mounting for disengaging the brake shoe from the line.

2. In a device of the character describes the combination with a pulley, of a mounting therefor, a brake bar pivotally carried by said mounting, a brake shoe carried by the brake bar and adapted to engage a line passed over the pulley, means formed upon the brake bar for engagement with asupport, and means carried by the mount ing for moving the brake shoe out of engagement with the line.

3. In a device of the character described the combination with a grooved pulley, of a pair of supporting side bars therefor, ot a brake bar pivotally mounted between the supporting bars and having a brake shoe adapted to engage a line passed over the pulley, and means carried by one of said supporting bars for causing said brake shoe to disengage the line.

4 In a device of the character described the combination with agrooved pulley, a pair of side supporting bars for said pulley, a brake lever, means for pivotally mounting said brake lever between said bars, a brake shoe carried by said brake lever and adapted to engage a line passed over the pulley, a hooked end formed upon said brakelever and adapted to engage a suitable support, whereby said brake lever, supporting bars and pulley are supported through the :iedium of the brake lever, and means car- ,riedby one or" said supporting bars for manually releasing said'brake shoe.

5. In a device of the character described the combination with a grooved pulley, of a pair of supporting bars located upon opposite sides thereot, said bars extendingbeyond said pulley, a brake bar pivotally mounted between said supporting bars, a bralre shoe carried by said brake bar for engagement with a line passed over the pulley, a hook formed upon the brake bar for engagement with a suitable support, whereby said b-rake bar, supporting bars and pulley are supported through the medium of the brake bar, such supporting means causing the brake shoe to engage the said line, an arm formed upon one of said supporting bars, a flexible element depending from said arm and adapted to be engaged 'by the operator, whereby said arm may be pulled down to cause the brake shoe to disengage the line, and means to permit of said last named arm being swung about its pivot 'independently of the other supporting bar.
