This invention relates 'to games or game is to provide an entertainingdevice of the class specified which :is self-oontained, simple in operation and wherein skill and chance are fairly combined to produce different cross words in accordance with the preparation of the playing field and playing pieces of the game.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cross Word puzzle or game wherein the several components are so assembled that they will always be retained in associated relation and ready for operation by skillful manipulation.
With these and other objects and advan tages in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of theseveral parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a game embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, showing the playing pieces out of the sockets therefor.
-Fi 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 1, showing the playing pieces in the sockets therefor.
The improved game comprises a box or enclosure having a bottom 5, to which are suitably secured angularly disposed sides and ends 6, in which a transparent plate 7 of glass or other material is fitted, as clearly shown by Fig. 2. The dimensions of the box or enclosure may. be varied and the ma terial used in the construction of the same may be wood, metal, composition or any substance adapted for the purpose. In the.
upper side of the bottom a plurality of sockets 8 and 9 are formed and of circular contour, the sockets 8 centrally intersectlng the sockets 9, to produce a cross word figure when the puzzle is properly worked or solved. The sockets 8 and 9 arevariously colored and have therein letters 10 disposed in the centers thereof. In addition to the sockets 8 and 9 at what may be termed the bottom of the puzzle there is an enlarged boards, andthe primary objectof the same with the words or otherwise applied therein the words Puzzle game, as at 12. Freely movable over the upper surface of th-e bottom 5 are a series of playing pieces 1310f disk form having letters ll-applied-to the centers thereof and colored similarlyto the sockets into which the saidplaying pieces or disks are adapted to be moved A playing pieee Puzzle/game, as at l6, thereon is also provided for movement into the socket 11, this playing piece 15. .being colored similarly to, the said latter socket. All of the playing pieces are similarly colored and lettered on both sides, so that in the event the same by any means may become overturned, they will be in condition for operation or for solving the puzzle in accordance with the features of the invention. The playing pieces or disks 13 are slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the sockets 9, and likewise, the playing piece 15 issmaller than the socket 11 so that these respective playing pieces may be readily disposed in the sockets.
In the present form of improved game the playing pieces or disks 13 are equal in number to the sockets 9 therefor and are lettered to spell the Words Cross and Word, the pieces when arranged to spell the word Gross extending transversely in one direction over the playing field or bottom 5, and the remaining pieces which are arranged .to spell WVord cent-rally intersectthe playing pieces spelling the word Cross at right angles. The puzzle is completed when the playing pieces 18 are disposed in the proper sockets therefor by the disposition of the playing piece 15 in the socket 11, and when all of the playing pieces are in their respective sockets, the solved puzzle will present the words Cross word puzzle game. It is obvious that the particular letters on the playing pieces and in the sockets may be modified or changed,
and furthermore, the sockets and playing pieces may be increased in number to spell various words, the essential features of the invention residing in the corresponding coloring and lettering of the playing pieces socket 11 of suitable color-having imprinted and socketsand the duplication of similar letters and colors on opposite sides of the said playing pieces or disks.
In operating the puzzle theplayer-holds the same in his hands and manipulates the entire enclosure by tilting or vibrating the same in different directions in order to discharacters therein, and a plurality form colored similarly to the pose the proper playing pie'ceor disk in the socket corresponding thereto.
The improved puzzle'game may be ro} duced at'a small expense and sold at a mi'n1-' mum cost, and will serve as an effective medium of entertainment and diversion.
