Description
F. V. LANTZ WASHING MACHINE June 30, 1925.
Filed Dec. 1, 1921' Patented June 30, 1925.
[ UNITED STATES FRANK V. LANTZ, F MCARTHUR, OHIO.
WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed December 1, 1921. SeriaLNo. 519,268 I To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK V. LANTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mo- Arthur, in the county of Vinton, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Vilashing Machine, of whichthe following isa specification.
This invention relates to machines designed primarily for washing fabrics, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a foraminous cylinder for holding fabrics, this cylinder being mounted for rotation within a container supplied with 'cleans'ing fluid so that the fabrics will be thoroughly agitated within the fluid and quickly cleaned.
Another object is to provide a cylinder which can be readily placed in or removed from its container, there being driving mechanism for rotating the cylinder readily.
A further object is to provide driving means which can be disengaged quickly from the cylinder so as to allow the cylinder to be removed for the purpose, of cleaning it.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a central vertical section taken longitudinally through the housing of the machine, the cylinder being shown in elevation.
Figure 2 is an elevation of a portion of one end of the machine.
Figure 3 is an enlarged elevation of the movable bearing bar of the drive mechanism, one position of the bar being indicated by dotted lines.
Figure 4: is a detail View of one of the bearings for the trunnions.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a container provided with a cover 2 preferably hinged as at 3 and which may be provided with a handle 4. This cover has a steam vent 5 normally closed by a safety valve 6 whereby when steam pressure within the structure becomes v.
excessive the valve willopen automatically.
Secured to the inner faces of the ends of the container are bearing members 7 substantially V-shaped as indicatedin Figured and designed to engage and support trunnions 8extending from the heads of acy1- inder .9, thus to support the cylinder for rotation in the container. A' gear 10 is ar-, ranged at one end of the cylinder and concentric with one of the trunnions. The cylinder is provided with a movable cover 11 which can besecured in place byajsuitable fastener such'as indicated, at i 12 '1 Secured along the upper edge of one end of the container is a strip 13 having a laterally extending ear 14 adjacent one end for engagement by a pivot bolt 15 extending transversely through the strip 13. Pivotally mounted on this bolt and between the strip 13 and the ear 14 is a movable strip 16 provided with an angular extension 17 at its free end. This extension is adapted to be engaged by a pivoted dog 18 as shown in Figure 3 so as thus to hold the strip 16 in lower position. A bearing 19 is formed on or secured to the strip 16 and journaled therein is a shaft 20 adapted to extend through a notch 21 in the lower edge of one end of the cover 2. A stop strip 14' is extended from the lower edge of the strip 13 and serves to lap the strip 16 and limit the downward movement of said strip relative to the strip 13. A gear 22 is connected to the inner end of shaft 20 and is adapted to mesh with the gear 10. A crank arm or the like indicated at 23 is provided at the outer end of the shaft 20 whereby the gear can be rotated.
When the cover 2 is raised the strip 16 can be swung upwardly and backwardly, thus shifting the gear 22 out of mesh with gear 10. Cylinder 9 can then be removed by lifting the trunnions 8 out of the bearings 7. When the cylinder is in position in the container 1 and the cover 2 is raised the cover 11 of the cylinder can be opened, fabrics placed within the cylinder and the cover then closed. Cleansing fluid can be placed in the container 1, the strip 16 swung downwardly so as to be locked by the dog 18, and the cover 2 lowered so that the notch 21 therein will be back of and closed by the bearing 19. V
The peripheral portion of the cylinder is preferably made of a strong metal fabric so that water can circulate there'through freely; 7
Thus aftertht iabricshave been laces in 7 smallerthan the gear 10 sothat the cylinder Will be rotated at a reduced speed.
It will be seen thatth'e structure can be cleaned. readily and as it is formed of very :fizt; it foafiiiot easily get out of order. The f m iifr 1- 5 11 be needs-S's wash boiler byi iaingdt ona sto'v so that they'vater within the coiit a iner cifibe boiled 'Whilethe cylinder is being rotated therein.
Whatis claimed is Iii a Washing machine, the combination with a container for holding a cleansing fluid and a cover moyably mounted on the container, of a foraminousf cylinder mounted for rotation Within the container, a stationa'ry 'Strip'fiXedIy con' ected to one end of the cbhtaihr, asa extending upwva'rdly from the bottom thereof, a movable strip piVo'tally connected to the stationarystrip and normally lapped by and bearing against the. stop, a shaft journaled in the movable strip, an angular extension'depending from one. end of said movable strip, adogpjv i ally mounted on the container and vadapted to gravitate to position over the extension tov hold the movable strip in position upon the stop, a gear on the cylinder, and=ajear on the shaft normally meshing With the cylinder gear and adapted to be held iii-mesh,
