` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS PARKES AND ALFRED PARKES, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PRINTING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,437, dated July 29, 1856.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS PARKns and ALFRED PARKES, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Printing- Press; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of t-his specification, in which- Figure 1, is a longitudinal vertical section of our improvement, the plane of section being through the center. Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of the same.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Our invention consists, lst, in the employment or use of rotating printing cylinders fitted in vibrating bearings and connected by gearing with a cylinder having flat forms attached to its periphery, as will be presently shown and described, whereby impressions may be taken from flat forms on a rotating cylinder in an expeditious and perfect manner.
2nd, our invention consists in the peculiar means employed for feeding or presenting the sheets to the printing cylinders whereby both sides of the sheets may be printed upon before they leave the machine.
3rd, our invention consists in the peculiar device or means employed for feeding two or more printing cylinders from one feed board and presenting the sheets to one fly.
To enable others skilled in theart to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a framing, .which may be constructed in any proper manner to support t-he working parts.
B, represents a cylinder having two segments, or portions cut off, so as to leave or form, at opposite points on its periphery,
two flat surfaces a, a, on which the forms are placed or secured. l
C, O, are two inkl rollers, the axes bf which are fitted in bearings b, which are attached to rods c, said rods working in guides and having spiral springs around them, which springs keep the rollers C, pressed upon the periphery of the cylinder B, and forms on the flat surfaces ai, a.
D, D, represent two printing cylinders, which'are provided with fingers d, attached to rods e, fitted within the cylinders, said cylinders being hollow and the fingers project-ing through longitudinal slots f, made in their peripheries. Each rod has two levers g pivoted to an arm h, the arms being attached transversely to the rods andthe ends of the levers passing through slots or openings in the peripheries of the cylinders, see Fig. l. One end of each cylinder D, has a toothed anch E upon it, and each flanch gears into a toothed flanch F, at one end of the cylinder B. TheJ axes of the printing cylinders D, D, are fitted in sliding or vibrating bearings z', which work in boxes j, attached to each side of the framing Each bearing has a rod lc, attached to it, said rods having friction rollers on their outer ends, the rollers being fitted in grooves Z, made in the sides of the cylinder B, the grooves corresponding in form to the periphery of the cylinder, with the exception that they are slightly concave under the parts a, a, see dotted lines, Fig. l. By means of the grooves Z, and sliding bearings i, the cylinders D, D, are moved in and out to conform to the shape of the cylinder B, that is, they are made to bear upon the whole surface of the flat portions a, a, but not upon the cylindrical portions (which are reserved for ink distribution), in consequence of the bearings sliding in their boxes G, represents the feed board which rests upon spiral springs m, placed on vertical 4rods n attached to a cross bar in the framing. The rods n, pass, one through each corner ofthe feed board and serve as guides to the feed board.
H, represents the fly board which is below thefeed board and arranged in a similar manner, being placed on springs 0, which are around rods p, said rods passing through the corners of the fly board.
In the framing A, there are placed transversely, three shafts g, g, g, each of which has a series of pulleys r, upon it, and s, is a shaft, the ends of which are fitted in elastic or yielding bearings t, the upper ends of which are connected by a cross rod u, against `which a cam or wiper wheel fu, on a shaft fw,
acts. The shaft w, is rotated by means of connecting rod aa, attached to cranks y, which are actuatedby cams I, I, on the ends of the shaft of the cylinder B. The shaft s, is placed directly over the shaft g, and has pulleys c, upon it, around which, tapes 1. pass, said tapes passing around pulleys 2, on a shaft 3, which is placed between vertical sliding bars 4, 4, in the framing A. Two other shafts 5 and 6, are also placed between the same sliding bars, the shafts 3, 5, 6, being placed one over the other, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. rlhe shafts 5, 6, have each pulleys 7, 8, upon them around which, tapes 9, 10, pass. The tape 9 passes over the pulleys 1, on the shaft g, and under pulleys on a shaft 10, and around pulleys on a shaft 12, thence backward underneath pulleys on a shaftvl, and over the pulley 7, on the shaft Q', and around the pulleys on the shaft 5, the tapes 9 forming endless belts, see Fig. 1. The tapes 10, pass around pulleys on a similar shaft 14, 15, and around the pulleys 8 and 7, on the shafts 6, g and Q, the latter tapes also forming endless bands as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The sliding bars 4, 4, are operated byveccentrics J, J, which are placed on a shaft K in the framing A.
a', a, a, are three shafts which are placed one over the other in the framing A. These shafts are each provided with a series of pulleys around which, tapes b, 5, pass, the tapes 6, on the upper shaft a, pass aro-und pulleys on a shaft 0, the tapes b, pass around pulleys on a shaft CZ and the tapes 5', pass around pulleys on a shaft e. y
Around the upper print-ing cylinder D, two tapes f', 7" pass; these tapes passI around pulleys on a shaft g, the ends of which work in rods t, which are attached to the sliding bearings z",' the shaft Q', consequently works back and forth with the cylinder D. The shaft CZ', around the pulleys of which, the tapes Z9 pass, has its bearings in arms 7L", which are attached to a shaft e", one of said arms having a rod j', attached to it. The lower end of the rod j', has a horizontal arm 7c attached to it.
K, is a shaft which has two cams or eccentrics upon it, one of which L, is shown in Fig. 1. The cam L, bears against a sliding frame M, which has an inclined plane on one of its sides, said inclined plane, a, acting upon the rod j. Within the frame M, there is placed a pulley X, around which, a tape or belt Z passes, said belt also passing around a pulley on the shaft c. A belt m', passes around the lower printing cylinder D, said belt also passing around a pulley on a shaft n', which passes through a slot in the sliding frame M. A shaft o', also passes through a slot in the sliding frame M, said shaft having a pulley Q9', upon it, around which pulley, a belt gx, passes, said belt also passing around a pulley on the shaft 14. The two shafts n', 0, have pulleys upon them, around which a cross belt s", passes. Below the three shafts a', a, a, there are placed three shafts t, u', o, which have tapes passing around them, and these tapes pass over4 pulleys on shafts arranged relatively with the lower cylinder D, precisely as those previously described.
The operation is as follows. The sheets, to be printed, are placed upon the feed board G, in a pile, or one on the top of the other, as shown in blue, Fig. 1, and motion being given the shaft of the cylinder B, said cylinder is rotated and also the printing cylinders D, D, and-ink rollers C, C, the ink rollers inking the forms on the flat surfaces a, a, of the cylinder B. The shaft s is moved down or depressed, by the cam lv, and the top sheet of paper, having been placed by hand, passes between its pulleys e, and the pulleys fr', on the shaft g, said sheet. passing up between the tapes 1 and 9, and then between the tapes b, ZJ. The sliding bars 4, 4, being moved upward atl this period by the cams J, so that the tapes 1,
and 9, may conduct the. sheet between the tapes ZJ as shown in Fig. 1, the sheet being indicated by blue arrows. The end of the sheet passes upon the shaft g and is grasped by the fingers cl, and carried around the upper cylinder D, and receives 4its impression from one of the forms, the sheet, printed on one side, then passes upon the tapes 6 and the shaft c, drops or falls a trifle, the lower end of the rod j, having the inclined plane, ax, moved from underneath it, and the sheet passes between the tapes Z2', Z9, and stops a short time, till the other form on the cylinder B, reaches a proper point. When the sheet moves backward and is again caught by the lingers on the upper cylinder D, and the opposite side of the sheet receives its impression from the other form. The dwell or cessation of the movement of the sheet, is produced at the proper time by the cam I, which actuates the slide M, and the reverse movement of the tapes is produced by causing the pulley 70X, to bear alternately against the pulleys on the shafts n', 0, the movement of the sliding frame M, producing this effect, and the dwell of the tapes being produced in consequence of the pulley 79X, being a short time free from contact with either of the pulleys n', 0, but held by the friction shoe cxx.
The sheet, when printed on both sides, is conveyed back between the tapes Z2, b, and down between the tapes 9, and 10, and passes underneath the heel of a fly A', which is operated by pins 1X, on one of the cams J, said ily depositing the sheet upon the Hy board H.
When the bars 4, 4, descend, the succeedving sheet is carried by the lower tapes to the lower cylinder D, in the same manner, preclsely, as the one just described, consequently `two printing cylinders are fed from one feed board and each sheet has both sides printed, the sheets receiving the impression, first from one form and then from the other. As the feed and fly boards rest upon springs, they will gradually rise and fall as the paper accumulates and diminishes upon them.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new andvdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cylinder B, having flat surfaces a, a, on its periphery, to receive the forms, in combination with the printing cylinders D, D, placed in sliding bearings, and arranged substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
2. We claim the reciprocating shafts 3, 5, 6, and stationary shafts a', a, a", t u', o', with the tapes arranged as shown, whereby the two printing cylinders D, D, are fed from one feed board and the sheets therefrom, when printed on both sides, deposited -upon one and the same fly board.
