Description

Broilers.

PATENT OFFICE.
DUBUQUE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM G. OHAM- BERLAIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,36 1, dated August 25,1814; application filed May 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAGOB WILLGING, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Broiler; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved broiler complete. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in section, showing the pivotal connection of the broiler and its handle.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention is an improvement on the broiler for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me bearing date on the 31st day of December, A; D. 1872. The nature of my invention consists in a broiler composed of two parts hinged together at one end, and clasped together near the middle of their length, and supported at their other ends by means of a short axial pivot-on a single bent handle, which handle is constructed to be passed down through the pot-hole of a stove, and clasped upon a portion of the top of the stove, all as will be hereinafter described.
My improvement permits either half of the broiler to be moved independent of its handle,
or both halves to be moved together, while, at. the same time, the broiler is greatly simplified and lessened in cost as compared with other two-part broilers which are constructed to be turned over.
The following description of my invention will enable others skilled in the art to understand it.
handle B to an end piece of one of the sections of the broiler by means of a pivot, r, and thus allow the two sections A A to be turned over, so that either section may be brought undermost. As the pivot r is equidistant from the ends of the end piece a of the section which is attached to the handle B, the broiler will be held in proper position after adjustment. It is necessary to employ some suitable device for fastening together the broiler-sections when shut, and, for this purpose, I employ two loops of wire. One loop, 0, (the longest,)is jointed to a bar of the section A, and overlaps the section A. The shortest loop, d, is jointed to a bar of the section A, so as to pass around the end of the loop a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus holding the two sections together. The broiler is supported inside of the fire-chamber of a cook stove, as described in the Letters Patent above referred tothat is to say, by means of a tongue, 8, and horns g, which are connected together and adj'ustably attached to the handle B by means of a screw and thumbnut, f, and an oblong slot, 6. The tongue is passed beneath the edge surrounding a boilerhole, and the horns 9 rest upon the top-plate of the stove outside of said. hole.
It will be seen from the above description how readily, and with what convenience, a piece of meat can be confined between the broiler-sections, and turned without removing it from the broiler or-opening the said sections.
I therefore claim as an improvement on my patent referred to- The broiler herein described, consisting of the two hinged sections A A, clasping device d 0, short axial pivot r, and the single supporting and confining handle B, which is furnished with the horns g, tongue 8, and clamp f, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JACOB WILLGING.
