A TTOHNEYS 1,543,600 D. T. CLARK code for the station designated St. Louis, BIO. The characters forming the code for this station are II, S and I). The user new manipulatesthe casing 3 trom side to side causingthe various indicator's to move about the pivot 12, such movement being facili-- tated by the Weight of the balls l5 until one of the indicators can be brought to rest in registration with one of the letters of said code, at which time the ball associated with said indicator1 will engage in one of the recesses of the row traversed by said ball. It then becomes necessary to bring each of the remaining indicators into registration With one oit the other characters the code and at the same time so 1nanipulate the casing that the indicator or indicators which have already been brought to rest in registration with other characters Will not be displaced by the tilting ot the casing which, if excessive, will cause the ball l5 to be disengaged from a recess in which it is resting.

Although three indicators and three rows of recesses have been shown, it vvill, of course, be understood'that the number of indicators and rows of recesses is optional and needonly correspond to the number ot' charactersvin the various codes.

That is claimed is:

l. In a puzzle, an index including a piu rality o1" characters, a plurality of indicators movable with respect. to said index and manipulated by gravity to register each. with a predetermined one of said characters,

In a puzzle, an index including a plurality of characters, a plurality of indicators movable about a common center and with respect to said index to register each With a predetermined one of said characters, and meansto retain each indicator in position after it has been registered With its associated character.

3. In a puzzle, a base having a plurality of recesses therein, an index on said base including' characters, a plurality of indicators on said base, each of which is mov able to register With one ot said characters, and means movable With each indicator ane engageable in one of said recesses When the associated indicator is in registration with one of said characters.

4. In a puzzle, a base having a plurality of rows of recesses therein, an index ou said base including a plurality ot characters, a plurality of indicators on said base,

each of said indicators being associated with one of said rows of recesses and movable to register with one of said characters, and means movable With each indicator and engageable in a recess in the associated roiv when said indicator is in registration with a predetermined one of said characters.

5. In a puzzle, a base having a plurality of recesses therein, an index on said base including characters, a plurality of indicators 0n said base, each of Which is inevable to register With one of said characters, and a ball movable With each indicator and engageable in one of said recesses When said indicator is in registration With one of said characters.

In a puzzle, an index in'cluding a plurality of characters, a plurality of indicators of different lengths movable With respect to said index to register each` With one of the characters thereon, a base on which said indicators are movable and having a plurality of rows of recesses therein, each row 'being associated with one ot said indicators, a common pivot on said base for said indicators and with respect to which said rows of recesses are concentrically arranged, and means movable with each indicator and engageable in one otthe recesses in the associated row when the' indicator is in registration with one of said characters.

7. In a puzzle, an index including a plurality of characters, a plurality of indicators pivotally movable relative to saidA index to register each With one of said char* acters, and a base supporting said indicators and including means for releasably maintaining said indicators in registering positions. In a puzzle, an index including a plurality of characters, a plurality of indica tors movable about a common center and successively registrable each with one of said characters, and means for releasably maintaining each indicator in a registering pee'- tion during the registration of the succeeding indicators.

9. In a puzzle, an index includingaplurality of characters, a plurality of pointers successively registrable each Witha predetermined one of said characters, and means for releasably maintaining each pointer in a registering position during the registration ot the succeeding pointers.
