Description

June 23, 1925.
'o. P. CLOYD OVERHEAD VALVE COVER Filed May 31, 1924 OSCAR PAUL GLOYD, 0F CLINTON, INDIANA.
OVERHEAIDVALVE COVER.
Application filed May 31, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR PAUL Coon), a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Vermilion and State of lndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overhead- Valve Covers, oil. which the following is a specification.
This invention is in the way of a covering for the working mechanism of an overhead valve and its object is to provide a practical, simple and efficient means to prevent dust and dirt from lodging on the valve stem and spring and corroding the same, and also to prevent the dust and dirt from working into the valve seat and grinding the same, thereby causing leaks.
Another object is to provide a means for lubricating the working mechanism of the valve thereby adding materially to the life of the same.
These and other objects will be apparent from the acconipanying drawing and specilication.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a sectional view of the valve covering as mounted over a valve;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the asserm bled valve covering. v
In carrying out this invention 1 provide a tapered body 1 having a rocker arm slot 2 cut therein. A hollow cap 3 is secured to the top of the tapered body 1 by means of screws 4. An oil cup 5 threadedly engages the hollow cap 3 to permit filling the said hollow cap 3 with oil. A wick 6 made of telt or some similar substance is secured in the bottom of the hollow cap 3 to facilitate the lubrication of the valve operating mechanism. A base 7 which is adapted to engage the valvestem spring 8 has a valve stem aperture 9 provided therein and is secured to the tapered body 1 by means of screws 10.
To assemble the device over an overhead valve, the rocker arm and the valve stem spring 8 are removed; the base 7 is then placed over the valve stem, whereupon the said valve stem spring 8 is replaced to its po- Serial No. 717,171.
sition on the valve stem and secured thereto. The bottom of the valve stem spring 8 engages the insideot the base 7. The tapered body 1 is then placed over the valve stem and spring and secured to the base 7 by means of the screws 10, after which the rocker arm is passed through the rocker arm slot- 2 of the tapered body 1 and secured in its former position. The hollow cap 3 carrying the oil cup 5 and wick 6 is secured to the tapered body 1, in such a position that the wick 6 engages the rocker arm in order to oil the valve working mechanism. The advantages of this device are apparenttrom the foregoing description.
lVhile I have herein described a certain specific method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is un derstood same may be varied in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. in a covering as described for the working inechanisn'i of an overhead valve, a tapered body, having a rocker arm slot cut therein; a hollow cap secured to the tapered body; an oil cup engaging the hollow cap and comnmnicating with the inside thereof; a wick secured in the said hollow cap and communicating with the inside thereof; and a base adapted to engage the bottom of the valve stem spring and having a valve stem aperture pierced therein, secured to the tapered body.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising a tapered body, having a rocker arm slot cut therein; a cap secured to the tapered body; valve operating mechanism lubricating means incorporated in the cap; and a base, adapted to engage the bottom of the valve stem spring, and having a valve stem aperture pierced therein, secured to the tapered body.
In testimony whereof I allik my signature.
