PATENT OFFICE.
MARC GRANDJEAN, OF' PARIS, FRANCE.
STENOGRAPHIC IEACHINE.
Application filed January 5, 1923. Serial hTo. 611,091.
To whom. it 122 1 3 concern:
Be it known that I, Mano GRANDJEAN,
a citizen of the Republic of France, and residing at Paris, Seine Department, Bourse du Commerce, Rue du Louvre, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Stenographic Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object the use of a simple and practical device in combination with a stenographic machine in order to control the direction in which the ribbon is unwound and to enable the use of a single ribbon for printing in two or more colors.
For this purpose, a suitable carriage is caused to swing upon a vertical axle which is secured to the machine frame and is provided with two pawls; according to the position of the carriage, either of the said pawls can be actuated by arms which are controlled by the operation of the keys and the pawl will rotate one of the two ribbon reels, the second reel being simply actuated by drawing upon the ribbon.
hen opposite the printing t pe, the ribbon is stretched upon two spoo s which can be raised and lowered so that the upper or the lower part of the said ribbon may coincide with the type, these parts having different colors.
The appended drawings which are given by way of example shew an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line AA of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section perpendicular to the preceding, shewing the control of the winding of the ribbon.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation shewing thecontrol of the vertical movement of the ribbon.
1 indicates the carriage which is pivoted by the axle 2 to the frame of the machine 3, upon the said carriage are mounted by the axles 4 the disks 5 and 6 which are connected together by a spring 7 and make contact with a member 8 which is maintained at 9. The disks 5 and 6 carry the members 10 and 11 which arepivoted to the axles 12 and 13 and are urged by the springs 14 and 15; the said members have respectively attached thereto the strips 16 and 17 acting as ratchets and cooperating with the gear wheels 18 and 19 secured respectively to thereels 20 and 21.
The adjustable stop-pieces 22'and' 23 hold the members 10 and 11 in such position that the said ratchets engage the gear wheels 18 and 19. The disks 5 and 6 are respectively provided with the rollers 24 and 25 which are adjustable by means of an oval hole, for example, and cooperate with the arms 26 and 27 controlled by the key levers 28; the latter are pivoted on the axle 29 and com-. prise a toe 30 adapted to raise the arms 26 The movement of the carriage iscontrolled by a lever 32 pivoted on an axle 33 and comprising a toe engaging in a jaw 35 secured to the said carriage.
A. locking member 36 movable upon an axle 37 and urged by a spring 38 has formed therein two recesses 39 and 40 cooperating with a stud 41 mounted on the carriage. In these conditions, moving the lever 32 to the right or left will cause the said carriage to swing to the left or right on the pivot 2, and one of the rollers 24 or 25 is pushed back by one of the arms 26 or 27. In this manner, one of the reels is controlled by one of the pawls 16, 17 and the other will be loose on its axle. v
To provide for the proper unwinding of the ribbon, the springs 42, 43 alternately press against the wheels 18, 19 in order to brake the loose reel. To change the color of. the characters, the spools 44 supporting the ribbon 45 are vertically slidable on their axles 46; the. ends of the members 48 disposed upon the frame 49 are caused to swing upon the axles50; the said frame is secured to an arm 51 connected with a link 52 which is controlled by a lever 53, and according to the position of this lever, the said spools are brought to the top or bottomof the stroke and are held in these positions, so that the bottom or the top of the ribbon will coincide withthe type; in this manner printing in two colors can be effected by the use of a two-color ribbon.
Obviously, it will be feasible to make use of a ribbon of suitable width in order to provide for any desired number of colors, and in this event the lever 53 is stopped in a like number of positions.
Claims 1. In a stenographic machine, the combination of two ribbon reels adapted for and 27 and to' turn them upon the axles 31.
loose rotation, at toothed wheel mounted upon each reel, a carriage adapted to swing upon the machine frame and to be maintained in two different positions between the said reels, an oscillating disk disposed at either side of the said carriage, a reaction spring connecting the said disks together, a stoppiece for said disks, a support pivoted to each disk, a reaction spring for each support, a metal strip disnosed upon each support and serving as a pawl for the control of one of the said toothed wheels, and means for transmitting the motion of the keys to the said disks.
2. In a stenographic machine, the combination of two ribbon reels adapted for loose rotation, a toothed Wheel mounted upon each reel, a carriage adapted to swing upon the machine frame and to be maintained in two different positions between the said reels, an oscillating disk disposed at either side of the said carriage, a reaction spring connecting the said disks together, a stop-piece for said disks, a support pivoted to each disk, a reaction spring for each support, a metal strip disposed upon each support and serving as a pawl for the control of one of the said toothed wheels, an adjustable roller disposed upon each disk,a finger oscillating upon the machine frame and adapted to act upon said roller and to be controlled bythe key levers of the machine.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name.
MARC GRANDJEAN.
