CURTAIN FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application fi doet her 2, .1923. Serial-110668 123.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that FRANK B. SrMrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 19 Hooker Avenue, in the city of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtains for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to side curtains for automobiles, and one object of the invention is to provide a series of curtains that when not in use can be folded and secured to the inner surface of the top of the vehicle.
Another object being to provide curtains of stiff material, so constructed as to'fold at or near the middle thereof, and to fold upward and having their upper edges hinged to the top of the vehicle, in such a manner as to adapt them to fold against and be secured to the top by suitable means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of curtain that is so mounted or secured to the vehicle that the same may slide back and forth, one curtain passing the other to allow'of the free passage of the occupants of the vehicle, or to be secured in any position to partly close the opening.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and claimed and shown in the drawings which form a part thereof and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, but it is fully understood that while I have described my invention as herewith shown that I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown as slight changes may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings v Figure 1. is a partial side elevation of an automobile, showing the curtains in a closed position.
Figure 2. is a partial inside view of the vehicle top, showing the method of securing the curtains thereto.
Figure 8. is a partial view of the under side of the vehicle top, showing the manner of retaining the curtains in a folded position when not in use.
Figure e, is a partial View of a corner of the windshield showing the manner of connecting the edge of the adjacent curtain.
Figure 5. is a partial cross sectional view of the vehicle top showing a curtain in the folded position.
Referring to the drawings An automobile body 1, is shown having the doors 2 and 3 and the top 4 supported on the bows 5, 6 and 7 and the windshield 8, in the usual manner.
The curtain 10 is of the usual attached type, but the curtains 10 and 11 are of novel construction and comprise two stiff sections hinged together at the line 12 by their covering material in such a manner that the lower half can be folded upwardly against the upper half.
For attaching said curtains to the vehicle top, there is provided the rod or track 13 which has its ends secured to the bows 6 and 7 and this rod 13 may be straight or slightly bent to conform to the shape of the side of the top 4, and also may be of any suitable material, and of any desired shape in cross section.
To the upper edge of the top curtain sections are secured the eyes or clips 14 which embrace the rod 18 and are adapted to slide or turn thereon.
The adjacent edges of the front and baclr curtain overlap each other to form a tight joint, and the adjacent eyes 14: are transposed sothat either curtain will pass the other but can not entirely separate; and in this manner it will be seen that to allow entrance to the front of the vehicle, the front curtain is slid to the rear past the rear C111" tain, while to give access to the rear seat, the rear curtain is slid past the front curtain, and both curtains same time, and if it is desired to retain the front curtain in a partly open position, its lower edge may be secured to the side of the vehicle at any predetermined point by the usual button and eye 15.
For providing a tight joint with the windshield, there is provided an angle piece 16 which is secured to the frame 17 and provided with the clips 18 which hold the edge of the front curtain between the same and the angle 16. v
For retaining the curtains in a folded position out of the way and yet be instantly accessible for use, there are provided a series of movable buttons or clips" 19 secured to may be slid at the i the bows 5 and 6 .in such a manner that they will retain the folded curtain against the inner surface of the top 5 as shown in F igures 3 and 4; while for securing the curtains in their lowered position there are provided the usual buttons and eyes near the lower edge.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a curtain for automobiles having a top and bows, of stiff fabric curtain sections hinged together and adapted to fold upon each other, of means secured to said top for supporting saidcurtains comprising a rod. and means whereby said curtains can be slid past each other.
In testimony whereof I hereunto al'iix my signature.
FRANK B. SIMPSON.
