Description
UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. BARTON, OF ORANGEBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAN ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,316, dated August 25,1874; application filed July 9,1874.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BARTON,
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. 7
My invention relates to an improvement in fly brushes or fans; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of vdevices, which will be more fully described hereafter," whereby the brush or brushes, which are suspended from the ceiling, are operated by the foot.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of my brush.
or represents a suitable bar, secured to the ceiling above the table, and through which is cut one or more tenons or slots, in which are pivoted the rods or handles 0, carrying the brushes d. These rods or handles pass down through slots cut in the reciprocating rod or bar a, to which they are pivoted, and by means of which they are moved back and forth. This bar 0 is pivoted to the upper end of the vertical rod g, which is pivoted to a suitable support or bearing, h; and this rod has a guide, 1', around its upper end, to keep it straight, and a spring, j, bearing against its lower end, so as to return it to position after having been moved. Pivoted to the lower end of the rod 9' is a rod, Z, which extends under the table, andhas a pocket, 0, formed upon its end, which catches over the toe of the operators foot. By working this rod back and forth the brush or brushes d are set in motion, the number of brushes depending on the length of thetable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a fly brush or fan, the combination of the bar a, rod 0, brush d, rods 0 g 1, bearing h, guide 2', and spring j, the parts being arranged.- for operation substantially as. shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM SAMUEL BARTON.
