Patented July 28,1874.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALEB E. HICKS, OF EAST BBIDGEWATEB, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY TRUNDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,487, dated July 28,1874; application filed June 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALEB E. limits, of East Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing tormingapart of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing my improvement.
My invention relates to that class of toys having the image of a horse or other animal mounted in such a manner as to be moved automatically when the toy is drawn along the floor or ground; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which the motions of the image are rendered more natural or life-like than in toys of this character as ordinarily constructed.
In the drawing, A is the image of a horse, having a slide or guide, F, attached to one of its hind feet, one of its forward feet being pivoted or attached to the crank-shaft D. The wheels 0 O are rigidly fixed to the crankshaft, which passes loosely through holes in the ends of the side pieces B B. A bent wire support, G, in which the slide F works, is attached to the under side of rear ends of the side pieces, which are also provided with a handle or tong, E.
From the foregoing, the nature and operation of my invention will be obvious to all conversant with such matters.
When the tong E is grasped in the hand and the toy pushed along the ground, the crank D will be revolved, causing the horse to rear and plunge or gallop in a very natural manner, the slide F working in the support G to admit of the necessary forward and backward movements of the image.
It will be obvious that the image of any other animal than the horse may he used without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I am aware that a toy has been constructed having the image of ahorse mounted in such a manner as to be moved by means of wheels and a crank-shaft, and therefore do not claim the same, broadly; but
What I claim is- The toy described, consisting of the image A, provided with the slide F, the wheels 0 0, provided with the crank-shaft D, and the side pieces B B, provided with the support G, all combined and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
