IMPRovEMENT |'N EXTRA SEATS FOR cARs, cARRlAGEs, ac.
Speciiication forming part of lLetters Patent No. 154,3 13, dated August 25, 1874; application filed July 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BALDWIN, of San J ose, Santa Clara county, California, have invented certain Improvements in Passengers7 Seats, of which the following is a specification z The object of my invention is to provide for extra seats in carriages, stages, cars, steamboats, and other such public conveyances. These seatsare placed in the arm-restsand drop into the same when not in use. My invention consists in constructing the armrest in such a manner that a slot is formed between the two sides thereof. A In this slot an axle is pivoted to the two sides of the rest, and near the front of the same, which is provided with a hole in the center, in which again is pivoted the arm or rod of the, extra seat. When the seat is required for use, it is drawn out andturned horizontally, and then pushed forward until it assumes a horizontal position, in which position it.is held by a support in front of the arm-rest. To prevent the seat from turning when in this position, the arm is made square or provided with suitable projections to accomplish the same result.
In order to describe my invention more fully I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a side view of a seat and armrest, with the extra seat thrown back.` Fig. II is a plan view, with the extra seat placed in position for use.
A is the arm-rest provided with the slot b. cis the axle pivoted to the sides d and e of the arm-rest A. f is, the hole inthe center of the axle c, into which is inserted and freely rotates the arm H of the extra seat J. m m are the projections on the arm H, to prevent the same from4 turning. g is a support for arm H when placed in position, as shown in Fig. II.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim.
The extra seat J provided withvarin' and projections m m, in combination with axle c, support g, and arm-rest A, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES E. BALDWIN.
