T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUsTAvE LIDsnEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Pump-Feed Oil Can; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference be ing had to the accompanyingdrawings, andv to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to 'an improved type of oil can wherein the spout cover. has a lever mechanism supported thereon in position to. operate a chambered piston or plunger, said plunger having rigidly secured thereto an angled stem or oil feed pipe which is adapted to be moved with said plunger when the lever is operated to cause oil. to be pumped into a sleeve'and out through a spring controlled valve into the oil can spout for distribution.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple feed oil can wherein an oil feed pipe which projects into the can. has. the
upper end thereof rigidly secured to a lever operated plunger for the purpose of permitting oil to be-pumped fro-m the oil can spout as desired.
It is also an objectlof this invention to,
provide an' improved pump feed oil. can wherein the oil can spout is provided with a sleeve or casing having a simplified form of outlet valve mounted thereon in position tobe actuated by an oil pumping plunger having an oil feed tube formed thereon and projecting into the oil can with said plunger and oil feed pipe adapted to be simulta neously actuated against the resistance of a control spring by a lever mechanism supported on the oil can cover.
It is an important object of this invention to provide an improved oilcan wherein an oil pump mechanism is supported on the oil can cover and embraces a lever operated plunger device to which one end of an angled oil feed pipe is rigidly secured with said oil feed pipe having an oil inlet valve positioned in the other-end thereof near the p bottom of the oil can to afford an efiective lubricatingv device for use 1n cases where it is not necessary to tip or tilt the oil can downwardly beyond a horizontal position.
Other and further important objects of i this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and theaccompanying drawings.

Rigidly secured within the cover'housing 5 is a sleeve 7 the lower end of which is open and projects into the cover 4 to a point substantially in the plane of the cover flanges 3; The upper end of the sleeve 7 is provided with an integral closure plate 8 having an aperture in the middle thereof with-the margin of the metal forming said aperture struck upwardly to afford a circular conical valve seat 9 to receive an oil outlet control ball valve 10 as illustrated in Figure 4. The control ball valve 10 is resiliently held seated in position in the conical valve seat 9 by means of a light coiled control spring 11 the upper end of which seats against the top of a. U-shaped retaining strap or staple 12 the ends of the side arms of which are slightly bent inwardly and curved to afford the retaining tongues 13 adapted to be removably snapped over oposite portions of the conical valve seat 9 to hold the spring 11 and the valve ball 10 in position upon the sleeve 7.
Disposed within the sleeve 7 is a heavy coiled spring 14 the'upper end of which sea-ts against the inner face of the top plate 8 of the sleeve 7. The lower end of the conthereof positioned near the bottom of the trol spring 14 is seated in a chambered or hollow cup-shaped piston or plunger l5the upper end of which is open and slidably projects into the lower open end of the sleeve 7. Integrally formed or rigidly secured to the closed bottom of the plunger 15 around a circular opening therein is the upper end of an oil feed pipe or stem 16 which is slightly bent at an angle at 17, (Figure 2) so that the lower portion of said oil teed stem is inclined with respect to the;
axis of the container and has the lower end container adjacent the lower portion of the front wall portion of the container as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. Removably engaged on the lower end of the oil teed stem 16 is a cap 18 having a ball valve 19 closing an oil intake opening provided in said cap.
For the purpose of operating the plunger 15 and the oil feed stem 16 alever mechanism is provided on the oil can cover 4. Said cover 4 is provided with a concave socket or seat 20 to aliord a "fulcrum seat for a thumb operated lever constructed of a plurality of parts. The lever mechanism comprises a concave washer or bearing plate 21 which is seated for frictional sliding movement in the concave socket 20. Rigidly secured to the concave washer 21 is the lower curved end ci a thumb lever 22. Integrally formed on the lower curved end of the lever 22 is a long lug or tongue 23 which projects through an opening in the washer 21 and through an aperture provided'in the socket 20, of the oil can cover. The tongue 23 has the end thereof bent to rigidly engage "5 around the crotch end 24 of a two-tined and seat against a curved washer or shield- .27 which is frictionally'positioned against the bottom of the cover socket 20 to close the slot or aperture therein as illustrated in Figure 4.
The container 1 is adapted to be filled with oil through the open top or neck thereof after which the cover 4c is adapted to be removably engaged on the container 1 with the cover flanges 3 frictionally engaging the flanges formed on the neck of the container. The cover 1- supports the nozzle or spout 6 and also supports the lever and pump mechanisms of the improved pump feed oil can. When the cover is in place on the container r 1- the oil feed pipe 16 is positioned as illustrated in Figure 2 with the valvepositioned in the lower front corner of the container. W hen it is desired to oil a bearing the oil can is carried by means of the handle 28 with the thumb of the hand carrying the oil can resting upon the outer end of the lever 22. The oil can is then tilted toward a horizontal position with the outlet snout of the nozzle 6 properly positioned at the bearing to be oiled. By operating the lever 22 toward the cover 1 the tines 25 are swung upwardly and having frictional sliding contact with the bottom of the plunger 15 cause said plunger to slide inwardly into the lower end of the sleeve 7 thereby compressing the control spring 14 and at the same time elevating the oil feed stem or pipe 16 within the container 1 with the upward movement of the plunger 15. Repeated operations of the lever 22 will therefore cause a pumping action to take place within the container so that oil from the container is drawn into the lower end of the oil feed pipe 16 around the ball valve 19 to fill the oil teed pipe and the chamber formed between the sleeve? and the plunger 15. It will thus be noted that whenthe lever 22 is operated the plunger will cause .oil within the trap chamber to beiorced against the ball valve 10 thereby moving the same into open position against the action of the spring 11 and permitting oil from the oil trap to be pumped out through the oil can nozzle or spout 6 into the joint or bearing to be lubricated. g

It will be noted that this particular type of pump feed oil can is constructed 'more particularly for use when oiling bearings and joints which are so positioned that the oil can does not have to be tilted below a horizontal position or entirely inverted as ordinarily is the practice. l/Yith the can tilted into horizontal position or slightly above horizontal, all of the oil within the can may be pumped into the lower valve end of the oil feed stem 16 and out of the can a nozzle.
The improved pump feed 011 can of this invention is of simplified construction having a reduced number of parts affording an oil can of less expensive construction, simple of operation and withslight possibility of any of the opera'ting parts getting out of operating order. 7
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do, not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A pump feed oil can comprising a container, a closure therefor having a spout supported thereon, a spring controlled seat, a strap removably engaged on said plunger mounte'd forj reciprocationvin the lower end of said spout,- an oil feed pipe-rigidly=secured to said;.plunger and extending downwardly into :said container, 'a'.-lever mechanism on said closureadapted to be operated. i to simultaneously reciprocate [said plunger and said oil feed 'pipe, and check valves in said closure and said feed-pipe. 2. A pump feed oilacan comprising a con tainer, a j spout therefor, atplunger slidably mounted within said spout, a spring for controlling said-plunger, an angled oil feed pipe rigidly secured to said plunger and projecting downwardly into said container, a lever mechanism supported on :said spout and contacting said plunger to permit reciprocationo'f the. plunger-and said oil feed pipe when the lever is actuated, and control valves in saidspout and said feed pipe.

A lubricating device of the class described comprising a container, a cover removably engaged thereon, a spout rigidly secured to said cover with the lower'end of said spout of cylindrical form, a sleeve rigidly secured in the cylindrical end of said spout and havinga valve seat at the upper end thereof, a ball valve seated in said valve sleeve, a spring positioned in said strap for resiliently holding the ball seated in'said valve seat, a plunger slidably mounted in the lower end of said sleeve, a spring positioned between the top of said sleeve and said plunger, an oil feed pipe rigidly se-,
cured to said plunger and extending downwardly into said container, a valve in said oilfeed pipe, and a pivoted lever mechanism supported on said cover and contacting said plunger to permit the plunger together with said oil feed pipe to be reciprocated when said lever mechanism is operated.

A pump feed oilcan comprising a container, a spout removably securedthereon, a sleeve secured in said spout, a control valve supported on oneend of said sleeve, a spring controlled plunger positioned to reciprocate in the other end of said sleeve, a valve controlled oil feed pipe in said container having the upper end thereof rigidly secured to said plunger, and a lever pivotally supported on said spout having the inner end thereof engaged with said plunger to cause reciprocation or said plunger and said oil feed pipe when the outer end of said lever is-operated. In an oil feed device of the class described the combination With a spout, of a valve therein, a reciprocating oil feed pipe, a valve therein, a plunger rigidly secured on one end of said pipe and having sliding engagement with said spout, and a lever mechanism on said spout for causing reciprocation of said pipe and said plunger.

In a device of the class described the combination with an oil can cover, of a sleeve secured thereln, a valve supported on one end' of said sleeve, a spring controlled plunger slidab-le in the other end of said sleeve, an oil feed pipe having one end thereofrigidly secured to said plungenand a control valve in the other end o'f-said pipe.
15. An oil feed device of the class described comprising a'container, a valve controlled spout removably engaged: thereon, a spring controlled plunger slidably engaged in said spout, a valve controlled oil feed pipe rigidly secured to said plunger, -a forked member slidably contacting said plunger, a lever pivotally supported on said spout,- and a tongue integrally formed on said lever formed to grip said forked memher to permit the forked member to be actuated by said lever to cause reciprocation of said plunger and said oil feed pipe With respect to said spout;
