GEORGE J. WILLIAMS AND EDWIN K. NELSON, JR., OF TAMPA, FLORIDA.k
CIGAR LIGHTER.
vApplication filed July 24, 1924. Serial No` 727,945.
To all whom it mag/ concern.:
yBe it known that we, GEORGE J. WILLIAMS and EDWIN K. NELSON, Jr., citizens of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a coinbi'nation cigar lighter and horn button designed particularly for use upon automo-.
biles. The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature embodying4 all of the features and advantagesfof a cigar lighter and ahorn button and also incorporating the additional advantage of considerable*convenience especially in the location of the cigar lighter.
Another very important feature of the invention is to provide a device of this nature having a very simple and efficient constructioiione which is reliable in operation, comparatively inexpensive in manufacture, readily installed, durable, strong, attractive in appearance, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described andclaimed.
through,
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device embodying the features of our invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical central section there- Figure 3 is va similar view showing the lhorn button swung'to a position to allow access to the cigar lighter, and
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are sections takenv substantially on Athe lines 4--4, 5-5 and 6 6 respectively of figure 2.
Referring to the drawing'in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the base of the device which is provided with a threaded bore 2 in order that the same maybe attached to the steering column or the like.l A stationary casing 3 of cylindrical construction is provided at its lower ends with lugs 4 which penetrate the base 1 and are bent inwardly so as to hold the stationary casing thereon. This stationary' casing houses a block of insulating material indicated at 5-and provided with an upper re'- cess 6 and a lower recess 7. A heating ele- .in order that a cigar or the like may be ment 8 is disposed within the recess 6 consisting of a coil which will become incandescent when a current passes therethrough lighted. This heating element 8 is electrically connected with screws 9 and 10 which pass through the block 5 connecting the recesses 6 and 7. A wire 11 is connected to screw 9 and also to a source of electrical energy 12 which is rounded as at 13. .Screw 10 isconnected to the resilient arm 14 vand a screw 15 supports a similar resilient arm 16 vadjacent thereto normally spaced therefrom. A pushrod 17 slidably 'mounted in bracket 18 is engageable with the arm 1G so that by pushing -inwardly upon the rod 17 Vthe arms 14 and 16 may be engagedvwith each other. Thus these arms and push rod form a circuit closer. This push rod 17 extends through the block 5 andthrough the stationary casing 3 so as toterininate ei.- teriorly thereof. f
A casing 2O is hinged at 21 to the stationary casing 3. This casing 2O is preferably cylindrical in formation having its upper edge provided with an inturned annular flange 22 forming arstop for the push button 23 mounted within the casing. A block 24: of insulating material is mounted within the casing and is formed with an upper recess 25 which receives the button 28. A stationary switch arm 26 is mounted in the recess on the bottom thereof being held in place by screw 27. A bolt 28 pulls a resilient switch arm 29 in place. This switch arm 29 normally holds the button 23 in a raised position and by depressing the button this arm 29 may be brought into engagement with fixed arm 26 thus forming a circuit closer. A suitable catch 30 is associated with the casing 3 and 20 to hold them in'their closed position as shown in Figure 2. To open the casings it is necessary to lift up upon this spring 1400 -Considering the device in its closed position it will be seen that when the button 23 is depressed .so as to engage switch arms 29 and 26 a current will How from battery 12 through conductor 11, conductors 32 and 35, bolt 28, arms 29 and 26, conductors 37, operating horn 38, through conductor 39 which is grounded at 40.
When the device is opened and arms 14 and 16 are engaged with each other the current flows from the battery 12, through conductor 11, screw 9, heating element 8, screw 10, arms 14 and 16, conductor 41 which is connected to the conductor 39k that is grounded at 40.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will now be clearly understood without a more detailed description thereof.
While the preferred embodiment of our invention has been described in detail, it will be understood that we do not wish'to be limited to the particular construction set forth, since various changes in the form, material, proportions, and varrangement of arts, and in the details of construction may e resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is:
1. A device of the class described includ-l ing a casing, a closure hinged to the casing, a heating element in the casing, a pair of spring arms electrically connected with the heating element, a push rod extending through the casing to engage one of the spring arms and terminating exteriorly of 'the other.
2. A device of the class described including a casing, a closure for the casing, a heatlingelement in the casing, a circuit closer associated with the heating element, a push rod slidably mounted through the casing to engage the circuit closer for operation thereof, said push rod being engageable by the closure when opened to push the rod so as to actuate the circuit 'closer to a closed posit-ion. v
3. A device of the class described including a casing, an insulating block mounted in the casing havin Nan upper recess and a lower recess, a heating element mounted in the upper recess, a pair of spring arms mounted in the lower recess, means for electrically connecting the spring arms with the heating element, a vpush rod slidable through the casing so as to engage one of the spring arms, a hinged closure on the casing mounted so that when the same is opened it engages the push rod to force the same inwardly to Contact the spring arms together for closing the circuit all in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
