A further lobject of the invention is to` provide a sheet gripper of this character wherein thev engaging means may be readily adjusted to any desired position. n
lA still further object of the invention is the provision of a sheet gripper which may be quickly and accurately adjusted by means of a single rotatable member. n
Other objects land advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. Y I Y In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in 'which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout thek same:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device, t n Figure 2 isa side elevation of the same,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
FigureA 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1, and Y Figure 5 is a similar view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure l.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose ofillustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 indicates a metallic stripwhich connects my device to a printing machineor the like. It consists of a comparatively long flat strip 11l having a comparatively short extension 12 formed on one extremity, the extension being reduced to suitably engage a retaining c clamp 13.
The retaining clamp -13 is provided with a longitudinal groove therethrough the upper portion being adapted'to receive the connectf ing strip 10 while theintermediate portion of the groove which is somewhat wider receives a fork bracket. 14. The lower eX- tremity of the ygrooveiormed in the clamp 13 kis tapered and adapted to receive a suit- 1924.Y serial No. 716,150.
ably formed-'extension'ofra tongue 15. ,l The upper'k centralv portion zofthe clamp is provided" with lan internally threaded bore 16 adapted to receive a threaded set screw 17 threadedly mounted therein to retain the sections together.
."The"tongue 15 has. a reduced extremity andibeveledupon its upper side, the-sup#v portingstr1p`il8,upon which the tongue 15 i'sfformed', is substantially vthe :same width Y asthe' connecting strip 10, the clamp engaging portion having suitably tapering sides to engage the clamp.` rlhe fork bracket 14 is preferably constructed of spring metal and is bent to form an arc having formed on the extremity a flat extension 14 for connection with the bracket.r The'other extremitv of the fork bracket 14 carries a pair of arcuv ate fork members 19 having a slot 20 formed therebetween. The slot 20 is preferably somewhat wider than the tongue 15 positioned thereunder for a purpose which will be Vhereinafter described. An externally threaded bolt 21 is securely mounted within the tongue supporting` strip 18 and extends upwardly therefromthrough a suitable opening formed in the fork bracket 14, the upper extremity of the bolt receiving a washer 22 and a knurled cap 23 threadedly mounted upon the bolt and adapted to adjust the fork 24 the connecting strip 10 may be of any suitable length depending upon the characl ter of the work and the machine upon which the device is mounted. It is considered advisable to provide numerous lengthsA of connecting strips which may be readily connected to the clamp 12 without affecting the other parts of the device.
In use, the device is especially adapted for use on printing machines, and more particularly to a machinev known as a Miller feeder wherein it serves as the sheet gripping fork. The gripper is employed for the purpose of feeding sheets of paper or cardboard upon the machine, the sheets becoming superimposed upon the tongue 15 and securely held thereon by the fork 19 the prongs of the fork being adjusted by rotation of the cap 23. Itis obvious that even adjustment of lthe fork, that is, the side prongs comprising the same, are obtained by adjustment of the knurled cap` 23 and the device adapted to suitably handle paper'or cardboard of any invention herewith shownand described is to be teken as the preferred ezgarnple of the same, and that various ohanges'as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts niyb'e resorted to Without 'l-deia'rting freni Athe spirit of the invention or the scope 4of the subjoined claims.
