UNITED ASTATES RANDAL'E TALLEY, or InwIN, PENNSYLVANIA, coraPAN'rnA coRroRArroN ELECTRIC' kppllcetion tiled-July 19,
T o all lwhom. it 'may concern.'
Be it known that. I,- RANDAL E. TALLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Irwin` in the county of Westmoreland and the' State of Pennsylvania have made a new and useful Invention in llectri'Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric furnaces and more particularly to electric vitreous enameling furnaces such as are used, for example, in .the manufactureof kitchen ware and the like. A
In furnaces of the lettertype the amount of heat lost through the door is many times higher than is the case with furnaces used for ordinary heating purposes due tothe fact' that, in an enamelmg furnace the door must be frequent-ly opened to permit re` product and the placing of afresh charge.- In running more than twenty charges of ware per hour the furnace door must be' opened more than forty times and if as high as thirty charges 25 per hour are, run Vthe door every minute. In any electric furnace the ratio of heat lost byradiation through the door structure tc that lost through the furnace Walls isV about 8 to I.
An object of my invention is to provide a furnace with heating elements so positioned as tn coinlx-nsute for the large amount of heat los* through the doeii A further ceja-.ct is to provide a vitreous enameling furnace haring e door compen sating Winding so placed in relation to the door as to suppiy additional heat at the point of greatest heat loss.
My invention is shown as applied to a double end furnace. of the resistance type 1;l` ut it is obviously vapplicable to other types 4of electric furnaces.'
In the drawings, showing one embodiment .of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view partly in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is' a vertical cross section on the line 2-12 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows. F-ig. 3 is a side elevation partly in vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direoi. of the arrows.
)As shown, my invention is applied to an must be opened A amount of heat which .essreuironv 'ro GEORGE i. HAGAN oF PENNSYLVANIA.

ordinary electric furnace having the usual hearth A1, side walls 2 and 3 and an arch 4,
all of whichmay be of any desired construction. Supported a'longthe walls of the furnace are theusual heating elements 5. On
the front'vall''is the usual door 7 shown,
in Vthis case, as suspended on supporting 'chains 8 running over sheaves 9. The door may be'of any desired type and operated by any suitable mechanism, as this'pforms no part of my present invention.
Inf-order to .compensate for the large is lost through'the vv--furnace door as above described I provide an 'additional heating element or compensating winding 10 located on the front wall ofthe furnace and, preferably, directly Abe .neath the door openmgs- I have found'this to be the most advantageous and eiiicientwa of compensatin for the hea-tv lost th'rougliy the door as Asu an element, so placed, provides additional heat immediately below the point of the greatestv heat loss resulting ina more efficient furnace and a more uniform temperature in the heating chamber.
Without such a. compensating element that 'art of the heatin chamber adjacent' the door would-be cooer than the rest of the chamber. This would result in an unevenly heated -furnace, thereby greatly reducing the operating etliciency thereof.
y providing mycompensating element a source of hea-t is pigovid'ed directly beneath 3. An' electric vfurnace having heating elei ments alongthe walls the reof, a door'in one vertical wall and a compensating heating 5 4.- An electric furnace having .heating ele# ments along the wallsv thereof, a door in one wall and a compensating heating element so as to compensate for heat lost through said door. Y 10 In testimony whereof, I havehereuntol subscribed my name this 16th day of July,
RANDAL E. frAnLizy.
