Description

m. MEL-Lus HOSE Filed Sept. 15, 1922 Patented June 16, 1925.4
GROVER B. MELLUS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
HOSE.
Application filed September 15, 1922. Serial No. 588,349.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GRovER B. MELLUS, a citizen of the United States, residing atLos Angeles, in the County of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose, of which the following isv a specification.
My invention relates to hose of the character embodied in my copending application l0 Serial No. 511,587, Patent Number 1,483,006
iled October 31, 1921, in which the hose is provided with a rib at .its open end for cooperation with the band of a garter, and an opening below the rib adapted to receive a portion of the garter clasp and to facilitate the application of the garter clasp in securely supporting the hose in extended position upon the leg.
A purpose of my present invention is the provision of a hose with or without a bead at its open end and provided with an opening below-fthe open end which is adapted to receive a portion of the garter clasp. This opening may be formed directly in the hose and backed by a supplementary piece of material to prevent contact of the garter clasp with the leg, or the opening may be formed in the supplemental piece of material with the latter attached to the outer side ofthe 30 hose so that the hose itself forms a backing for the opening to prevent the garter clasp contacting with the leg. Y
Although I have herein shown and described only two forms of hose embodying my invention, and will point out the novel features in claims, it is to be understood that various changes and" modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view showing in side elevation one form of hose embodying my invention in applied position upon the leg and r with a garter attached;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on an enlarlged scale takenon the line 2 2 of Figure Figure 3 is a fragmentary view showing another form of hose embodying my invention with a garter in applied position thereon;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the line 4-4 of -55 Figure 3.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in each of the several views.
Referring specifically to the drawings, and particularly to Figures 1 and 2, my invention is here shown as comprising a hose woven to provide at its upper or open end an annular bead 15. Interwoven -or otherwise secured tothe hose at a point below the bead l5 at which the clasp ofthe conventional form of garter is adapted to be attached, is a supplemental. piece of material 16. The material of which the element 16 is formed may be of the same or of a diferent material from that of which the hose is formed. This element is provided centrally Ythereof with anv opemng 17 which is adapted for the reception of the head strap of a garter so as to permit of the head portion of the clasp being inserted between the element 16 and the hose.
In practice, the garter shown in Figure 1 which is of conventional form, is applied in embracing position with respect to the calf of the leg with the band portion of the garter embracing the upper end of the hose beneath but contiguous to bead 15. The clasp portion of the garter depends in the usual manner from this band portion with the head strap designated at 18 extended through the opening 17 and between the element 16 and the hose in the manner clearly shown in Figure 2. The socket portion of the clasp/designated at 20 is now disposed at the outer side of the element 16 so that it can be readily applied to the head portion for securing the element between the two.
With the garter applied as described, it will be clear that the two function to maintain the upper end of the hose in extended position upon the leg. while the clasp of the garter engaging the element 16 effectively secures it in extended position about the ankle.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, I have here shown another form of hose embody 100` ing my invention in which the usual bead 15 is provided, but the hose itself is provided with an opening 21 at a point below the bead.
A piece of material designated at 22 is interwoven or otherwise secured to the inner side 105 of the hose so as to span the opening 21.
In the applied position of the garter, the i band thereof engages the bead 15, while the headstrap 18 is extended through the opening 21 and between the hose and the piece 110 of material 22 so that by applying the socket portion 20 to the head portion 19, the hose itself is gripped between the two for sustainin the sock in extended position upon the an le.
I claim as my invention:
l. A. hose having a bead formed at its o en end, and a supplemental piece of material secured to the leg portion of the hose, there being an opening from the outside to the space between the hose and the supplemental piece.
2. A hose having a bead 'formed at its open end, a supplemental piece of material feoured to the leg portion of the hose forming a space between said supplemental piece and the body of the hose, and an opening from the outside to said space, said opening being disposed substantially opposite Ithe center thereof.
3. A hose having a bead formed at its open end, a supplemental piece of material secured to the body of the hose so as to form a space between said piece and the body of the hose, and an opening formed in said piece substantially centrally thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
GROVER B. MELLUS.
