Hemp-Brakes.
Patented Aug. 18,1874.
THE GRAPHIC CO- PHO OLI rLKSSJrI PARK PLACE,N.Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEMP-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 154, 174, dated August 18, 1874; application filed July 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT C. DULIN and BENJAMIN S. BURGAN, of Congress, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flax-Thrashers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of our invention relates to an improvement in flax and hemp brakers and thrashers; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of devices, which will be more fully described hereafter, whereby we produce a machine simple in construction and efficient in operation.
The accompanying drawings represent our invention.
or represents a standard, secured to a suitable base, and around which the whole machine revolves. Pivoted upon this standard is the central block or pivot 0, which is prevented from bearing upon the top of the spider or ground-sills b by a washer, c. Pivoted to this central block, at right angles to the standard, is the frame a, and pivoted to the outside' of this frame, so as to also movevertically, is a block, d, through which the arm 0 passes, and which is braced by the curved rod g. Extending outward from the block d is the arm 0, upon which the tapering roller 72. is placed, which is of suflicient weight to thrash the flax as it rolls over it. To the arm is attached the bent rod i, to which the animals are fastened by means of the adjustable clevis j, which can be shifted back and forth at will, the inner end of the rod being held against the inner end of the roller by the collar and set-screw l, which also serves to keep the roller at the outer end of the arm. The roller h, being made tapering or beveled, swings around upon its circle more readily and easily than if straight, and bears upon the flax more steadily and evenly; and when desired there may be one, two, or any desired number of these rollers, according to the amount of flax to be thrashed. By means of the pivoted blocks 0 c d, the rollers are allowed both a horizontal and a vertical motion, so that they can accommodate themselves to any amount of flax or to any inequalities of surface, and by means of the adjustable shaft and setscrews the rollers can be adjusted in and out, so as to travel over any desired sized circle. The top of the shaft is provided with any suitable devices or means by which it may be securely held in position; I
Having thus described our invention, we claim The combination of the standard a and pivoted blocks 0 c d with the adjustable arm 0, carrying the roller, whereby a universal movement is given to the roller, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 29th day of June, 1874.
