Worm-Wheel isv formed asa clutch 'of the claw type, with its teeth projecting laterally, toward the extension l of the casing.
In said extension of the casing is housed the movable member g of the clutch, which is also of the claw type, with its teeth pro` jecting toward the clutch member formed by hub-portio-n p7; this clutch member g is suitably splined, as at r, on the shaft o so that it rotates therewith but may slide thereon toward and from clutch member p. Said clutch member g is a ring having a peripheral groove g in which are engaged the diametrically opposite roller projections s of a fork t which is suitably fixed on the upper end of a vertical rock-shaft a journaled in the extension l and base a of the casing at the right side of the latter. Villien the rock-shaft is rocked one way or the other the clutch member g is shifted into or out of engagement with clutch member p thus to cause shaft 0 to be driven from shaft Z through the worm and worm-wheel or remain at standstill.
To facilitate forming the casing and assembling the parts the casing may be constructed' in two parts, divided horizontally in a plane Substantially coincident with the center of the upper circular part c of the casing. The liquid lubricant may be supplied to the casing at a filling inlet b3 having a normally closed cap b4 and arranged at the maximum level which it is intended the lubricant should assume, i. e., always below all moving parts (Fig. 2). The lubricant is carried up and fed to the part-s in the quantity required for the proper working thereof without excess, as follows:
Attached to the cap j at its inner end is a shell or casing consisting of a circular thick disk 00 having a circular recess a formed in one face thereof and covered by a circular plate y, the recess being eccentric with respect to shaft Z which penetrates the disk and its plate centrally thereof. In this recess is journaled an internally toothed pump-member 2' and on the shaft is fixed to rotate therewith an externally toothed pump-member 3 which is of less diameter than pump-member 2 and has its teeth meshing with those of the latter, the intermesh of course only involving some of the. teeth of each member at any time. Fitting the space between the unmeshing parts of these members is a. fixed crescent-shaped piece 2. At one side, as below, the point of closest. approximation of the members a port 4 leads upwardly through the disk and delivers laterally into the recess e, said port having preferably an upwardly opening check-valve 4, and at the other side, as above, said point another port 5 leads laterally from said recess and then upwardly through the disk. A pipe 6, dipping into the liquid lubricant in the casing part 7), is attached to the disl and communicates with port 4; another pipe 7 is attached to the disk and communicates with port 5, being bent lup and over the worm-wheel and provided with spray-outlets 7 for spraying with lubricant the clutch member g and the teeth of t-he worm-wheel. Thus the main moving parts receive adequate lubricant, but only in such limited quantity that there is no excess to work out of the casing and no occasion for resort to elaborate types of stuffing-boxes or glands to prevent its escape. Only such a gland g is necessary as will prevent escape of the lubricant as the effect o-f capillary attraction. The rotation of the shaft being in the direction of the ar-` row in Fig. 4 it will be Vseen that where port 4 communicates with recess z the intermeshing teeth of the pump-members cause suction and where'port 5 leads from said recess they cause compression of the liquid thus sucked in, so that while the shaft is rotating the liquid is caused to flow continually up through pipe 6, the recess e' and pipe 7. Each time the lubricant is drawn into the space between two teeth of either pump-member it is retained therein by opposite surfaces of the crescent-shaped piece 2f until such space approximates the outlet 5; otherwise stated, said surfaces: conline the lubricant contained in eachV space against radial displacement from the time it enters the space at inlet 4 until it is to be. delivered at outlet 5.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In combination, a substantially closed upright casing, a horizontal drive-shaft projecting into the casing and a horizontal driven shaft protruding from the casing at a right angle to and above the driveshaft and both journaled in' the casing, a worm fixed on the drive-shaft and a worinwheel meshing therewith and revoluble on the driven shaft, means to disconnectivel connect said worm-wheel and driven shaft including a clutch member beside the wormwlieel and slidable on the driven shaft, the casing being adapted to contain lubricant below the worm, and means to convey the lubricant up and deliver it onto working surfaces of the worm-wheel and first-named means in limited quantity.
