Application filed April 14, 1923. Serial No. 632,027.'
. fication.
This invention, generally stated, relates to ash-trays as used by smokers and has more particular relation to that type pro- I vided with cigarette-choker devices.
The leading object of the present invention is to provide a simple, eflicient and comparatively inexpensive ash-tray provided with cigarette-choker equipment possessed of novel characteristics in that the parts may be readily taken apart for cleaning urposes; a continuous choker compartment is present in contradistinction to spaced apertures; and clogging of choker-apertures is eliminated. A further object resides in the provision of general details of construction and arrangement and combination of parts for attaining the results sought by said leading object.
, he invention consists of the im rovements hereinafter described and nally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and S00 e of the invention will be more fully on erstood .from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying 'drawings forming part) hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1, is a top or Ian view of a device embodying features 0 the invention.
Fig. 2, is a view, principally sectioned,
illustrating the manner of-assembling the illustrating another form of tray construction. I For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown 1n the accompanymg drawings several forms thereof which are p referred by me, since the same at present 0 ound in practice to glve satishave been factory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawings and referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 designates a dish-shaped receptacle, which in practice is stamped, spun or cast from metal, although other material may be employed as for instance glass. Fixed to and rising from the bottom of receptacle 10 is a stud 11 the upper end of which is screw-threaded at 12.
The receptacle 10 is provided with an annular, flat, horizontally extended rim 13. The annular wall of receptacle 10 as extending from the receptacle bottom to rim 13 is inclined in an outwardly extending direction as at 14, the juncture of wall 14; with the receptacle bottom forming an acute angle. Adapted to seat within receptacle 10, in nested relation therewith, is a part which functions in three, capacities. It completesa cigarette-choker channel, forms an ash-receiver and serves as a support for a match-box holder. In practice it is also stamped, spun or cast from metal although glass or other material may be employed. It consists of a dished portion 15 having a central, tapered upwardly extended member 16 and an annular, inclined outwardly extending skirt 17 The bottom edge of skirt 17 rests upon the bottom of receptacle l0 and fits snugly against the wall 14 of said receptacle. In cross-section there is thus provided a substantially. V-shaped channel 18 of annular, continuous formation to provide a cigarette-choker. The juncture of skirt 17 with the wall of dished portion 15 is flush with rim 13 of receptacle 10 to provide a cigar or cigarette rest. The part 15 forms an ash-receiver and the part 16 a which extends in a plane above rim 13 of receptacle 10 is apertured as at 19 to permit penetration of the threaded end 12 of stud 11. 20 designates a match-box holder the lower end of which is provided with a foot 21 interiorly screw-threaded for cooperatively en aging with the screw-threaded end of. stu 11 to lock the above described arts together. The top of art 16 is flat and foot 21 seats thereon. t is thus ap parent that the parts may be readily taken my device not only is the choker channel continuous thus accommodating many cigarettes but clogging thereof is eliminated since an implement may be readily moved around the annular channel to dislodge any obstructions. Further the device may be readily taken apart for cleaning purposes.
The construction shown in Fig. 3, is similar in all respects to that above described with this exception, that, the means of atv taching the parts in assembled position comprises a ball and socket connection instead of the parts 11, 12, 21. Fixed to the bottom of .eceptacle 10 is a socket formed with yielding or spring fingers 22. Fixed'to the bottom of foot 21 of match-box holder 20 is a stem 23 for passage through opening 19 of part 16,
said stem terminating in a ball for cooperatively engaging within the spring fingers 22.
In Fig. 4, a bayonet-joint connection is employed for interlocking the parts. The receptacle 10 has fixed to the bottom thereof a socket 24 the side wall of which is provided with a slot or groove shaped to cooperativelyreceive a pin fixed to a stem 25 carried by foot 21 of the match-box holder 20, whereby after introducing said stem within said socket a slight twist of the match-box holder will cause stem 25 to interlock socket 24.
Referring now to Fig. 5, a two-piece construction is shown instead of a three piece construction. In other words the receptacle and dished parts illustrated in Figs. 1, 2. 3
and 4 are formed as an integral structure mounted upon which is the match-box holder 20. 26 designates the ash-receiver and 27 the cigarette-choker channel. By making the walls .2829 so that they converge toward the bottom of the article the V-shaped, continuous, annular channel is provided as in Figs. 1, 2, 3and 4. Foot 21 of the match-box holder is provided with a screw-threaded stem 30. for passage through opening 19 of part 16, a nut 81 being provided to secure these parts together.
with
Fi 6, also shows a two-part construction but t e part 16' shown in Fig. 5, is omitted to provide an enlarged ash-chamber 32. Match-box holder 20 in this construction is supported upon a bowed strap 33 supported upon the fiat rim 13.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instanceshown and described the preferred embodiments thereof which have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. 1
What I claim is:
' 1. In a device of the character stated a receptacle of thin metal having an annular, outwardly and upwardly extended wall terminating in a fiat rim extended beyond the receptacle proper, a central ash-receiving part having an outwardly extended skirt seated within the receptacle said wall and skirt providing an annular continuous chokechannel of V-shaped cross-section and also providing a cigar or cigarette support, the juncture of said ash-receiving part and skirt being in the same plane with said rim.
2. In a device of the character stated a receptacle of thin metal having an annular, outwardly flared wall, terminating in a fiat rim extended beyond the receptacle proper, a central ash-receiving part having a central apertured portion extended above said receptacle topand having an outwardly flared skirt, said skirt and wall forming an annular continuous -choke-channel of substantially V-shaped cross-section when said parts are in nested relation and also providin a cigar or cigarette support, a stud carrieday said receptacle bottom and extended upwardly through said central apertured portion and a match-box holder seated upon said central portion and cooperatively engaging said stud to interlock the parts.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
EDMUND J. Y. HAMMETT.
