Description
JEssE s. EGGLESTON, OF AUBURN, NEw YORK, AND JOHN RICH, 0F
BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATING COMPOUNDS- Specification'formin g part of Letters Patent No. 154,130, dated August 18, 1874 application filed June 9, 1874.
' vantages over the lubricating oils and compoundsin ordinary use, both in cheapness and durability, and which will not turn rancid or decompose and corrode the iron or othermetal with which it comes in contact, as other lubricating compounds and oils are apt to do.
Our compound also possesses the property of mingling or mixing with steam, and thus more effectually accomplishing its work when employed to lubricate steam machinery. Our invention is designed particularly to-be used as a lubricant for steam-cylinders and steamchests and the other working parts of steamengines, in which the lubricant is liable to come incontact with the steam.
Our invention consists of a compound of borax, oil, and water. We use either animal, vegetable, or mineral oil, in the following proportions, viz.: Borax, say, five pounds; West Virginia or other oil, thirty gallons water, say, ten gallons. These ingredients we mix, preferably by the aid of heat; but under some circumstances they may be combined in a cold state, although it takes longer to effect a thorough chemical union of the difl'erent ingredients when combined without the aid of heat. We agitate the mass, by stirring or otherwise, after mixing, until the mass assumes a homogeneous unetuous form, when it is ready for use. The compound we apply in the same manner as the ordinary lubricants, by means of the ordinary oil-cups attached to the steam-chests and cylinders of engines, and, as it is liquid, it finds its way to the working parts of the engine in the same manner as oil.
We do not limit ourselves to the exact proportions of ingredients as above set forth, because the proportions may be varied without departing from the nature of the invention.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The within-described compound, consisting of borax, oil, and water, in about the proper tions of five pounds of borax. thirty gallons of oil, and ten gallons of water, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing,
we have hereunto set our hands this 1st day I of June, 1874.
