i 7 Be it known that I, JAMES Powers, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of N ewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coding Attachments for Typewriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for formulating and translating codes, and is herein designated as an automatic code machine. The invention relates particularly to improvements in the code formulator'and translator. disclosed and claimed in my United States patent for apparatus and method for formulating and translating codes, No. 1,315,406, patented Sept. 9, 1919, the object of the invention of said patent being to provide an apparatus for trans mitt-ing messages or correspondence in code language thereby to do away with the use of code books and other similar known code media, while at the same time providing an improved code system impossible of deciphering without-the key thereto; and to provide a code apparatus simple in construction and operation and by means of which innumerable codes can be formulated as required, so that if desired such codes may be changed fromday to day.
While the present invention relates to machines or apparatus or devices for formulatmg and translating codes, it is noted that the invention is not limited to formulating or translating machines nor in some respects,
even to bode machines.
One object of the present invention is to provide in an apparatus of this kind, an automatic code changing device by which, during the coding a-=new code will be automatically formulated from time to time-,as for instance at the endof each word, thus to prevent unauthorized decoding.
Another object of the present invention is to provide in an apparatus of this kind an improved arrangementfor facilitating the setting of the machine to the selected code.
Another object of the present invention is' to provide an apparatus of this kind which may be conveniently applied to and used with an ordinary typewriting machine without in any manner modifying or adjusting a slngle part of'the typewriting machine.
Other objects of the invention are to improve generally the simplicity and efficiency such apparatus and toprovide an apparatus of this kind which is durable, eco-.
nomical to manufacture and operate and Which will not easily get out of order.
Other objects of the'invention'will appear as the description proceeds; and while herein details of the invention are described, the
invention is not limited to these, since many and various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.

My improved coding machine 10 is shown in combination with a typewriting machine 11 having number and character keys 14. The coding machine is carried on a base 15 carrying a pair of pedestals 16 provided at their upper ends with horizontally alined bearing bores 17.. A worm wheel 75 fast on the lower end of said sleeve shaft 29 is engaged by a worm 76 fast on a code-changing worm shaft 78 rotatable in said alined bgaring bores 17 and an approximately central worm shaft bearing bore 79 (Fig. 7) in an index bracket 80 (Fig. 6) having an upper flange 81 mounted at one side edge of said top plate 25 and having a plurality of concentric pawl races 85 86 and 87 (Fig. 9) in its outer face each provided with pawl stops apart, the stops of the outer and middle races 87 and 86 comprising stop shoulders 88 and 89 disposed rearwardly and for wardly respectively, while the stops of the innermost concentric race 85 comprise depressions 90. An; index crank disk 93 fast on the outer end of said worm shaft 78 is provided near the periphery withan undercut radial slot 94 (Fig. 7), a ball-pawl bore 95 closed at theouter end and here shown diametrically opposite to the radial slot, and a handle 96 (Fig. 6) whereby the disk, worm shaft and said key-carrying disk may be rotated to change the code. A ball-pawl 98 in said pawl bore is pressed by a spring 99 into said depressions as the disk 28 rotated, thereby to indicate that the rods 40 a come into alinement with the heads 50 at eachquarter turnof the index disk 93. give what might be called the code number 1-13; then the operator would operate the crank 96 until the said number 13 regis- Thus he would when depressed on the key-carrying disk would depress say the D-key of the typewriter, .and the O-key of the key-carrying disk would depress the C-key of the typewriter, and so on, so that while the operator was writing the word Powers, 'the'typewriter would write some unintelligible word, which, however, would always be the same when the same numeral of the flange 63 was in register with the same number of the key-carrying disk. This word would be DCKSFG provided that in Fig. 3 thedisk was rotated say 13 spaces to the left to have the letter P correspond with the letter D on the typewriter, and the number 13 of the disk to register with the numeral 1 of the flange 63. However, it will be understood, of course, that the unintelligible word just quoted would not necessarily 'be the wordthat is written with the ordinary typewriter, because the letters need not be arranged as above stated and in general they would not be so arranged; but they simply serve as an example.
Theoperation thus far described is similar to that of my patent; but the present machine is susceptible to further changes of the code.
For instance, suppose the number 1 of the disk be made to register with the numeral 1 of the flange 63, and the flexible connector 46 leading from the D-key 38'be led, not to the D-key 12 of the typewriter, but to, say, the X-key 12 of the typewriter, and
the flexible connector from the C-key- 38 he led to the N-key 12, and the K-key 38 be connected to the T-key 12, then with the code number 1-13, as above stated, the spelling of the word Powers on the keys 38 would not spell the word DCKSFG on the tewriter as above stated, but might spell lie word XNTLFV.
The ferrules 57 (Fig. 2) are, as stated, removable 'and interchangeable, so that. by shifting the flexible connections, as just stated, a practically unlimited number of codes may be, made, which number could be multiplied by the number possible from rotating the disk 28. This would create a ever be needed.
It is, of course, understood that the flexible connectors 46 of the receiving-typewriter number of codes much larger than. could would be, as by previous understanding,-
arranged the same. as that of the sending J typewriter. Code instructions for changing able. In addition the code number given as 1-13 above, could by previous arrangement, or otherwise, be changed to any one of a large number of code numbers as often as desired. For instance, the sender could telegraph the code to the receiver each time a code letter was sent, or they could agree on some 'difi'erent code for each day of the week, month or year, or they could have some secret sign printed in the code letter itself to disclose the code number. Thousands of different secret ways of communicating the code number could be devised.
The number and character keys 39 and 14 are not in any way operatively connected with the code changing mechanism, since toinclude numbers and characters in codemessages would interfere with the telegraph- I ing of the code messages.
Separate keys 107 and 108 are also provlided for the spacing bar 116 and the capital 5 lift.
In accordance with the foregoing with the sending andreceiving arrangements being duplicates, the sending disk is set with the code-number say 1 -13, and this writes r presses the D-key 12. With a similar unreversed setting of the code number of 1- 13, depression of the D-key 38 would depress R-key 12, which is not desired. Therefore, in order to strike the P-key 12 of the receiving typewriter, the disk as must be rotated in reverse direction, thirteen spaces toright until number 1 of the typewriter registers with numeral 13 of the flange 63, thus giving the reverse code number 13-1,- wh-ich will cause depression of the D-key 38 ofthe disk to depress P-key 12 of the typewriter for commencing spelling the word Powers.
Additional means for still further complicating the code by automatically changing the code after each word will now be described. I I

.engageable with the spacing bar or key 116 of the typewriterand fulcrum'ed on a shift shaft 117 slidable in a shift sh'aft bearing with said shaft bearing 118 is provided w1th a plurality of notches 120 having characters associated designating 1, 2, 4 and .ofi' in any one of which may be received an index pin 121 fast in said shift shaft and engageable in said notches to set said spacing lever 115 in position to be out of reach of said fingers 114, as in Fig. 7, or to be engaged by the fingers 114 of the cam having a number of fingers corresponding inversely to said designating characters.
The operation of the above described automatic code changing device will be easily understood, when it is remembered that it merely automatically changes the code each time the typewriter is spaced.
The worm connection 7 5K 76 (Fig.v 4) is such that a quarter turn of the crank 96 will turn the key carrying disk the distance from one contact head to the adjacent contact head, thereby changing the code number one space for each quarter turn; the crank being rotated a half turn,"the code number will be changed two spaces; and if the crank be turned a complete turn, the code number will be changed'four spaces.
Thus if the machine be set for the code number "1-13 as above explained, and the pin 121 (Fig. 7 be set to 4,, the word Powers spelled once on the keys 38 Will typewrite the word DCKSFG as abdve described; and if the crank 96 be then turned one revolution to the right, or clockwise, the key-carrying disk will also be; counterclockwise through four [additional inter-key spaces or to the code-number1-17 or seventeen code-number.spaces in all, and at the same time the finger 114 of the cam 110 will depress the spacing key 116 and space the typewriter carriage one space. After this is done, the word Powers spelled on the keys 38- will typewrite ZYGOBC;
whereupon another clockwise complete revo- I lution of the crank96 will again space the typewriter carriage once, changing the code number to 1-21, and Powersispe'lled on the keys 38 will typewrite VUGKXY. If the pin 121 be set to 2, the fingers 114 of the cam 111 will space the carriage one space and the code will be changed two spaces on each half turn of the crank. In
like mannerif the pin 121 be set to 1 the carriagewill be spaced once by a finger of the cam 112 and the code will be changed one space on each quarter turn of the crank. It is, of course, understood that if the'flexibye connectors 46 be arranged differently, difl'erent incongruous words will be spelled as above explained.

If the crank 96 and disk 25 are to be revolved rightwardly, or clockwise, as above noted the pawl carrier. 100 is set to its outer position as indicated by the word Right so that the head 104 may snap over the shoulders 88 and preventanti-clockwise retrogression. If
the crank 96 is to be revolved leftwardly, or
anti-clockwise, the pawl carrier is moved to vinner position indicated by the word Left and the head 104 engages the shoulder 89 to prevent accidental clockwise or rightward movement.
'hen the automatic code-changinginechauism is to be used, the code number-must lie-given more in detail. Thus in the example just given, in detail, the code L133 24 could be telegraphed or otherwise communicated or agreed upon. This would mean that on the sending machine the number 13 of the key-carrying disk was set under thenumeral1 of the flange 63, that the pawl carrier 100 was set to the word Right on the disk 93, and that the pin 121 was set innotch l.
The receiving machine, however, would have to be set to the reverse code number 13-1 L4?- whieh would mean that the number 1 of the key carrying disk would have to be set under the numeral )6 a complete anticlockwise or leftward turn,
which would space the carriage once and change the. code number to 17-1,*wliereupon the second word would be copied, and so on. The action of the pawl. head 104 on the shoulder 89 'wouldpreVent' the turning, of the crank in the wrong direction:
As it is desirable to lock the coding machine to prevent the unauthorized decoding therewith or other use thereof, a convenient efiicient locking arrangement is provided whichwill now be described.
A bolt carrying bracket 125 (Fig. 8) mounted under thefflange 81 of thefindex bracket is provided with a bolt opening re-- ceiving a bolt 127 having its'outer end portion in a bolt opening 128 in the bracket 80 and slidable into a locking opening 131) (Fig. 5) of the index disk. A spring 131 engaging between-the index bracket and an intermediate cdllar 132 of the bolt yieldably retracts the bolt from the bolt opening except when held in place by a detent 133 3 fast on the pin cylinder 1340f a cylinder and engages under said top plate 25 to prolock 135 mounted in said top plate 25 with its escutcheon 136 above the top plate. When the lock is locked said detent holds said bolt in said bolt openin to prevent the rotation of the index disk, the adjustment of the keycarrying disk. and the changing of the code.
A sheet metal wall .140 (ljig. 1) surrounding'the mechanisms of the machine rests in a groove 141 (Fig. 2) on said base and on the upper edge 142 of said end brackets tect the mechanisms from dust, handling or the like, and to enhance the appearance of the machine.
I claim:
1. In combination, a support; a rotary key-carrying disk; keys on said disk in annular series; connections a ranged to be engageable by any one of saidkeys and to engage typewriter keys; code-changing means for rotating said disk; and spacing means whereby the typewriter is spaced as the disk is rotated.
2. In combination, a support; a rotary key-carrying disk; keys on said disk in annular series; connections arranged to be engageable by any one of said keys and to engage typewriter keys; code-changing means for rotating said disk; and spacing means whereby the typewriter is spaced as the disk is rotated one or more interkey space increments.
3. In combination, means for causing a l typewriter to write in code; and mechanism comprising a shaft for changing the code when the typewriteriis to be spaced; cams on said shaft provided with different numbers of actuating'fingers; a longitudinally shiftable shift shaft; and a spacing lever en- "gageable with the typewriter spacing lever which is fulcrumed on said shaft to be engaged by the fingers of any one or none of the cams as the shift shaft is shifted and the code changing shaft is rotated.
4. 25. In combination, a typewriter having keys; a support having an annular series of apertures; a rotary key-carrying disk having an annular series of numbers; an
annular series of keys corresponding to said numbers and provided with plunger rods slidable in said disk and alinable with said apertures connections disposed in said apertures and connected to and operating said typewriter keys; a code changing shaft adapted on rotation to rotate said disk; an
. index bracket; an index crank-disk fast on said shaft and having a bolt opening; a bolt 'slidable into locking engagement with said disk; anindex bracket having a flange secured under said support; an index crankdisk fast onsaid shaft and having a locking opening and ratchet connection with the index bracket for rotation in either direction;
a bolt carrying bracket mounted under said flange and provided with a bolt opening; a bolt "in said openings slidable into said locking opening and having an intermediate collar; a spring engaging between the index bracket and said collar for retracting the bolt; a cylinder lock mounted in said support With its pin cylinder projecting at its lower end; and a detent fast on said cylinder and adapted when the lock is locked to hold said bolt in said bolt opening to prevent adjustment of the key carrying disk.
27. In combination, a supporting men'iber formed with an annular series of apertures;
'a rotary key carrying disk disposed on said member and having an annular series of small boresalinable withsaid apertures;
letter keys provided with plunger rods "ertically slidable in said bores; flexible connections comprising "outer casing members secured to the lower ends of said longitudinal apertures, and inner members terminating at the upper ends with contact heads engageable by said plungers; springs resting on said support and yieldably upholding said'contaot heads; and guide supports receiving the lower ends of said outer casings and holding the flexible connections with their inner members in position to operate typewriter keys.

In combination, a shallow cup-shaped member having a co-axial sleeve boss, and having its side walls formed with anintermediate inner shoulder and an annular series of longitudinal apertures piercing said shoulder and the lower part of the member; a rotary key carrying disk provided with a sleeve shaft disposed in said boss, and with an annular series of small bores respectively alinable with any one of said apertures; letter keys provided with'plunger rods verticalily slidable in said bores and having actuating heads on their lower ends; flexible connections comprising outer casing members secured to the lower ends of said apertures, and inner members terminating at the upper ends with contact heads engageable by said actuating heads; bow-springs resting on said shoulder and yieldably upholding said contact heads; and guide supports receiving the lower ends of said outer casings and holding the flexible connections with their inner members in. position to opcrate-typewriter keys.
