UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCES W. LOCKI-IART, O'F OSAGE COUNTY, OKLAHOMA; MINNIE LOCKHART ADMIN- ISTRATBIX OF'THE ESTATE OF SAID F. W. LOCKHART, DECEASED.
DERRICK LEG.
Application filed June 7, 1924. Serial No. 718,627.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCES W. Loom HART, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Osage and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derrick Legs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to derrick legs such legs being particularly of a derrick of a type employed in the oil fields and it is an object of the invention to provide a leg of a sectional type embodying novel and improved means whereby the meeting end portions of the sections may be effectively coupled or held in assembled relation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved joint for the sections of a derrick leg and which joint is comprised of braces or girders for connecting adjacent sections.
Another object of the invention is to provide a leg of this kind with novel and improved means whereby a crown block may be effectively maintained in assembled position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved derrick leg whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set 3 forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood. I will now proceed to de 40 scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings. wherein Figure l. is a fragmentary view partly in elei'ation and partly in section of a derrick embodying legs constructed in accord ance with an embodiment. of my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary View of the meeting, ends of adjacent sections of a leg, and the parts associated therewith i1- separated relation;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the cap as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, L denotes a leg of a derrick of a general type employed in the oil fields and which comprises a plurality of sections 1 of desired length, the meeting ends of said sections being provided thereacross with the grooves 2, said grooves being herein disclosed as perpendicularly related.
snugly surrounding or embraein the meeting end portions of adjacent sectlons 1 is a sleeve or collar 3 of desired length and which is provided in adjacent faces with the openings 4 with each of which registers a groove 2 when the adjacent sections are in assembled relation. Insertible through each of said openings 4 and extending within the registering groove 2 is an end portion of a cross brace member or girder 5, said end portion crossing the end portion of the brace member or girder extending through the second opening 4. Disposed through the overlying portions of said members or girders 5 is a pin 6 of a length to extend therebeyond and to be received within the opening 7 arranged at substantially the axial center of the opposed or meeting ends of the sections 1.
By this means the adjacent sections 1 of the leg are effectively maintained in assembled relation yet in a manner which readilypermits the leg L to be knocked down when desired and also to be reassembled with equal facility.
0 denotes a cap adapted to be engaged with the upper portion of the assembled leg L said cap extending a desired distance above the upper end of the leg L when in applied position. Adjacent walls of the cap C have their upper portions extended outwardly in substantially perpendicular relation to the axis of the cap G to provide the lugs or plates 8 whereby crown blocks for the derrick may be effectively maintained in assembled relation.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a derrick leg constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with 100 which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not 105 wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practive except as hereinafter claimed. 110
Oil
1" claim 1. A derrick leg comprising se arablesections adapted to be substantia ly alignedwhen in assembled relation, a sleeve snugly surrounding the meeting end portions of said sections, certain of the walls of the sleeve being provided with openings, brace members insertible through said openings and between the meetingends of the sections, and means for connecting the inserted end portions of the brace members, said means being also engageable with the meeting end portions of the sections.
2. A derrick leg comprising separable sections adapted to be substantially aligned when in assembled relation, a sleeve snugly surrounding the meeting end portions of said sections, certain of the walls of the sleeve being provided with openings, brace members insertible through said openings and between the meeting ends of the sections, and means 'for connecting the inserted end portions of the brace members, the meeting ends of the sections being provided with grooves to-receive the inserted end portions of the brace members.
3. A derrick leg comprising separable sections adapted to be substantially aligned when in assembled relation, a sleeve snugly surrounding the meetin end portions of said sections, certain o the walls of the sleeve being provided with openings, brace members insertible through said openings, the inserted end portions of said members being in overlying relation, a pin insertible through the overlying portions of said members and extending therebeyond, the meeting end portions of the sections being provided with openings to receive the end portions of the pin.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
FRANCES W. LOOKHART.
