- My present invention is a crown mold, and it is an especial object of this invention to provide simple and effective means for use in the production of suit-ably tapered and curved blocks for use in constructing the tops or crowns of cesspools, or the like.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. Mnrnmuir, a citizen of the United States, residing at hell, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements'in Crown Molds, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is a crown mold, and it is an especial object of this invention to provide simple and effective means for use in the production of suit-ably tapered and curved blocks for use in constructing the tops or crowns of cesspools, or the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a mold comprising a. minimum number of parts and suitable means for connecting or disconnecting said parts; and, in a preferred embodiment of my invention, my mold may consist essentially of a back plate which may have an inward curvature and may be provided with flaring ends, and a front or closure plate, correspondingly curved, and optionally provided with suitable positioning lugs or stops and with a. somewhat extensive basalfiange, suitable for use in retaining this element, or an entire mold, in an upright or other desired position, the two elements of my mold being connected in any suitable way.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a crown mold of a type which may be utilized, by mere changes in dimension, in the production of either comparatively large or comparatively small crown blocks, my mold being preferably of such construction as to require neither, a bottom element nor a top element; and, in a preferred construction, either the body element or the supplemental closure element may be removed from a block, after the molding of the same, without disturbing the block or the other element of my mold, the respecby simple means, such as a pair of latches H pivoted to said body element.
Other objects of my invention will appear from the following description of a. preferred embodiment thereof, and from the appended claims, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring in detail to that specific embcdnnent of my invention which. I have chosen for purposes of illustration, as will be understood from an inspection of the drawings, my crown block mold consists essentially of two cooperating elements,one of these being a body portion or element '1, which may be provided with a tapered and inwardly convexed surface 2, whose upper edge 3 and lower edge 4 vmay be substantially parallel,,and which maybe laterally terminated by downwardly and outwardly flaring, integral sides 5, whose top edges 6, 6 may be respectively parallel with the bottom edges 7, 7, and whose horizontal diameter may be uniform, the "free edge of each of the said sides being extended to form guide wings 18, provided with guide slots 9, adapted to receive interfitting projections 10, upon a correspondingly tapered closure element 11. The tapered closure oricove-relement 11 may be so constructed that its upper edge 12 and its lower edge 18 shall be substantially parallel with one another and withthe up per and lower edges of the bodyelement already described; and this closureelement may be provided not only with the mentioned guiding projections .10, adapted to enter the respective guiding slots 9 in the wings 8, but also with positioning stops or lugs 14, adapted to overlie the edges of the respective sides 5, shown as integral with the body element of my mold, and also with a. basal flange 15, by which the said closure It will be obvious that when a mold of the character described is supported upon a flat surface, the upper and lower edgesiof the mold being shown as parallel and substantially horizontal, neither a bottom nor a top element is required, the flange '15 being suitably secured, as may be done by merely standing thereon, when my crown block mold is placed upon a floor or the like, or as maybe done by extending said flange under any suitable projection or projections, such as fingers 17, which may be suitably secured to a. table top, or the like. Any suitable plastic mixture, such asacoinparatively dry concrete mixture, maybe delivered into my mold through the iopen' top thereof, suitably tampe'dtherein, whendesired, and allowed to set sufliciently'to permit of the withdrawal of one or both of'the described mold elements and a i e-use thereof in the formation; of additional blocks, said blocks being afterward moistened or cured in a lznown manner, the p'orosi-tyof the block depending upon the character of the mixture employed and the density imparted thereto by tamping, as may berequired for the various uses to whichthe' blocks are to be put, comparatively porous blocks being entirely suitable for use in the construction of cesspools, or the like.-
i Although it will be; obvious that suitably tapered crown blocks ofvarious curvatures may be formed by a mold o-ft'he general character described, limiting cases in which curvatures become straight lines being suggested in Figures 5 and 6, it should be understood that the relationships between the respective inner faces of a mold of the character herein described are intended to be such as to produce blocks so proportioned that an intergral number thereof may be assembled to constitutea complete circle, in the manner of" a hollow frustum of a cone or pyramid, the lateral faces ofthe respec five blocks being adapted to contact in planes respectively intersectin the vertical axis of a cesspool, or the lite, in whose crown they may be employed; it'being understood that, when more than one tier of blocks are to be employed in the crown of a cesspool, the molds employed in the. construction of the blocks for anupper tier shall be of such reduced dimensions as to permit of the useofan identical number of blocks, such as six blocks, in each of the successive tiers, the lateral surfaces of all blocks being preferably vertical, and the top and bottom surfaces of all blocks being preferably horizontal, and the joints between successive tiers-of blocks being broken. In the construction of an ordinary cesspool, two tiers of crown bloclrs, each tier comprising six blocks, may advantageously be employed, my preferred construction being such that the blocks of each tier are mutually supporting and adapted to cooperate in resistance to vertical or lateral pressure, and such that the central opening left at the top of the'uppermost' tier of blocks may be closed by a simple flat" plate or ordinary manhole cover.

It is advantageous" to make the flange so broad th'atthe center of gravity of a complete mold, or that of a mold and its contents, shall fall within the base thereof; and it willbe understood 'that' the crown blocks formed by a mold of the character described may advantageously be formed and cured upon separate palettes, in a known manner.
Although I have herein described but one complete embodiment, it -wi'll be understood that various features thereof might be independently employed, and alsothat various modifications miq'l'it bemade therein without departure from. the spirit and scope of my invention, as the same-is indicated above and in the following claims-2 Vilmat I claim is v p 1. 5. In a crown mold, a tapered body element, and a correspondingly tapered closure element cooperating therewith to form a complete mold without top or bottom, and a removable ring adapted to extend between and conform to said mold elements.
6. In a crown mold, a body element having an inward convexity and downwardly and outwardly flaring sides, each provided with a guide slot and a tapered closure plate having projections fitting in the guide slots, and means for holding the plate in position between the sides.
7. In a crown mold, a body element hav ing an inward convexity and associated with downwardly and outwardly flaring sides, each provided with a guide slot and a ta, pered closure plate fitting between the sides and having projections fitting in the guide slots and having positioning stops to fit the edges of the sides, and latches pivoted against the sides to engage the projections.
8. In a. crown mold, a body element having an inward convexity and downwardly and outwardly flaring sides, each provided with a guide slot and a tapered closure plate having projections fitting in the guide slots, means for holding the plate in position between the sides, and a basal flange extending from the large end of the closure plate.
9. In a crown mold, a body element having an inward convexity and associated with downwardly and outwardly flaring sides, each provided with a guide slot and a tapered closure plate fitting between the sides and having projections fitting in the guide slots and having positioning stops to fit the edges of the sides, latches pivoted against the sides to engage the projections, and a basal flange extending from the large end of the closure plate.
