lle it known that l, Renner A. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll/lontpelier, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The present inventionv relates to display cabinets, and the object of the present invention is, generally, to provide a cabinet improved in various respects hereinafter appearing; and, more particularly, to 'provide a display cabinet having various display members, any one of which may be applied as desired to the rest of the cabinet structure; and further, to provide improved display members for such a cabinet; and fur--y ther, to provide improved means for removably securing such members to said structure; and further, to provide various other and more specific improved means and features in such a cabinet.
This and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the cabinet structure or structures hereinafter particularly described in the body of this speciiication and illustrated by the accompanying d 'awings, in which Figure l is a horizontal sectional view of a display cabinet, taken on line 1--1 of Fi gureB;
Figure. 2 is a like view of one section or unit thereof, but showing the closure member in its closed position;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof, taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the lower portion of the closure member and one form of display member carried thereby;
Figure 5 is a like view of the upper portion thereof; i
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional View of the upper part of said closure member and another form of display member;
Figure 7 is a like view of the same, the glass plate being omitted in this view;
Figure 8 is an inner side view of an upper and side portion of the closure member and another form of display member, cerclosure member shown in horizontal section taken on line 11 of Figure 3, anda top plan view of one of its supporting arms; and
Figure 12 is a view of a display cabinet sectioned similarly to Figure 1 but showing the closure member swingably mounted in the usual manner. l
In the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration by Figures 1, 2, 3 and 11 of the drawings and for detailed description thereof in the body of this specification, a cabinet unit is shown, "s-djacent` units appearing in Figure 1 on either side thereof` This cabinet has the top 1, bottom 2, sides 3 and back el. of any usual construction, and a door opening 5 in front. A closure member 6 for the door opening 5 is swingably mounted at 7 intermediate its sides on the outer ends of the arms 8 carried by and extending laterally from the .closure-supporting element 9 hinged at 10 on the cabinet adjacent one side of its door opening. It will be seen that this closure member 6 may be swung to the position seen in Figure 2 wherein it closes the door opening; and may be swung to various open positions seen in Figure l, the position shown in dotted lines at the right hand side of said view completely opening the door opening 5 and disclosing the goods kept or stored in the cabinet. This closure member 6 has an opening 11 therethrough and is adapted to removably carry any one of several diiferent forms of display members, some of which forms are shown in the drawings. To this end, the rectangular rframe (surrounding the opening 11) ot` this closure member is provided adjacent its upper yand lower ends with attaching means, such means in the construction illustrated'being recesses 12 and 13 extending toward theI side edges of said frame. The display members are provided adjacent their upper ends with attaching means, such means in the o and in Figures 8,
member has a support portion 2l whose fab ' construction shown being the portions or upward extensions 14.
In applying a display member to the closure member, it is moved upwardly, thus inserting its portion llt into the recess 12, and then its lower end is pushed toward the closure member and rests at l5 on the same; preferably however and with certain forms of the display member, the lower portion or extension 16 thereof is seated in the recess i3 oit the closure member'` the upper portion or extension -l stiil remaining held in the upper recess ln such assembling and in corresponding disassembling movements the display and closure members are moved relatively to each other in a substantially vertical direction.
Some oit the dil'lilerent forms ot display members which may be carried by the closure member' and remov bly secured thereto as described are shown in the drawings: lP igures eland 5 illustrate a simple term, consisting essentially of vertically held panel or plate i7; in Figures 6 and Y, the display member is a box or container comprising a rectangular trame i8 yand a ren'iosible back or panel. iSv-nd having an open nt 20; 9 and l0, the display upward project-ion le engages in the recess l2, and a display portion, a panel or plate 22 hinged at L3 to the support portion 2l and adapted to swing outwardly 'through the opening 5 in the closure member.
Catches or bolt-s may be mounted on the support portion 2l slidably into` and out ot a lreeper in the closure member tol support or securely attach said support portion to theclosnre member; and other catches 26 may be turnably mounted at 27 on the closure member, so that they may be turned into and out oit holding engagement with the display member.
ln Figure ll, is particularly shown means tor yicldingly hoiding the closure member G and the arm 8 in s 7ung-together position, such means comprising a catch 28 carried by said arm and having a spherical head yieldingly engaging in a spring socket 29 in the closure member when the arm and closure member are swung together. By this means fthe closure is held against accidental opening at its side adjacent the closure-supporting element 9.
A drawer 30 slidable to open and closed positions in the cabinet is so located relatively to the closure-supporting elementi), that when the trawer is partially open or `drawn out as seen in dotted lines in Figure il, the.l closing movement of the closure member causes Ethe curvedV surtace 3 1 ot said element to Contact the front of the drawer and push it to closed position shown in solid lines in said view.
It. will be understood that samples ot the goods contained within the cabinet are to be displayed on the display member (ot whatever torni) so as to vbe seen through the closures opening l1, which opening may have the removable glass pane 232.
lt is evident that any one of the various forms ot display members may be mounted on a closure member 6- which is swingably carried by the cabinet in the usual manner, as by the hinges 33, as shown in Figure l2.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details ot construction oit 'the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbetore shown or described l claim:
l. i cabinet having a door opening; a closure member for the door opening, swingably carried by the cabinet, and having van Vopening therethrough; ,a display member removably carried by the closure member and comprising a `support portion detachably carried by the closure member and a display portion hingedly mounted on the support portion and adapted to be swung through .the closure membcrs opening.
2. A cabinet having a door opening; a lclosure member for the door opening, swingably carried by the cabinet, and having'an opening therethrough; a display member removably carried by the closure member and comprising a 'support portion detachably carried by the closure member and a display portion hingedly mounted on the support portion and adapted to be swung through the closure members opening; catches mounted on said support portion slidably into and out ot supporting engagement with the closure member. y
3. ne cabinet having a door opening and a slidably supported drawer; a closure-supporting element hingedly mounted .on the cabinet adjacent one sideV ot 'the door opening and having laterally extending arms; a closure member 'for the door opening swingably mounted intermediate its sides on said arms, the closure-supporting velement and the drawer being so interrelatively positioned 'th at said element in its closing movement slidably contacts the front ot the drawer in its open position and pushes rit toward its closed position.
In testimony whereotl I have hereunto vset my hand at Montpelier, Ohio, this 24th day ot May, 1923. VROBERT A. SARGENT.
