UNITED STATES ANTON GLOWA, F HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
REVERSIBLE-ANGLE HANDLED BRUSH.
Application filed February 27, 1924. Serial No. 695,447.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON GLowA, a citizen of United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Angle Handled Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements m 0 brushes and more particularly to such types as are used for sweeping and like purposes in which a handle disposed at an angle is used.
The main object of the invention is to pro 5 vide such brush with a handle that can be instantly adjusted to extend at an angle from either side of the brush.
Another purpose is to produce a brush attachment that can be firmly secured to the back of the brush and carry a rotatable plate having a handle engaging element disposable in either of two directions.
These objects and aims are accomplished by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this disclosure, and in which 2- Figure 1 is a partial side elevational View of a conventional type of brush showing the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is a partial end view and partial section of the same.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan View of the upper attaching plate.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the mating plate.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates the backing of the floor brush or the like, in which are set tufts 11 of bristles in the ordinary manner.
Centrally in the backing 10 is a recess 12 and covering the recess to extend over a considerable portion of the backing is a plate 13, having holes for the reception of fastenings as the screws 15, other holes 16 being formed through the plate for a purpose further on explained.
Another plate 17, shaped and sized like the plate 13, is provided on its lower side with fixed pins 18 suited to engage in the openings 16 and on the other'side is a raised central lug 19 having an angular face 20.
A bolt 21 is screw-threaded into the lug 19, the extending portion of the bolt passing through central apertures 22 and 23, respeo'. tively in the plates 17 and 13, to reach into the recess 12.
Said bolt is provided with a head 24 above which is a coiled compression spring 25 impinging on the fixed plates 13 and-tending todraw the upper plate tightly against it.
Secured to the lug 19 is a tube 26 extending at any preferred angle and adapted to receive a handle 27, the same having fixed on opposite sides, pins 28 engageable, in bayo net joint slots 29 formed in the outer end of the tube 26 in such manner as to firmly hold the handle in the tube.
This effect is enhanced by a helical compression spring 30, its ends abutting respectively the face 20 of the lug 19 and the inner end of the handle 27, constituting a firm securing means by which the handle is held in operative position.
When it is desired to reverse the position of the handle relative to the brush, the handle is so manipulated as to raise the upper plate 17 sufficiently to clear the pins 18 from their seats in the holes 16, and thereafter rotating the plate 17 a half I turn, which will obviously bring the pins into register with the openings in reversed relation and cause the handle to assume an angle opposite to that which it originally had.
7 From the foregoing it will be seen that a reversible handled brush has been disclosed that effectively fulfills the mentioned purposes in a practical manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a brush having a backing containing a central circular recess, a plate fixed on said backing, a bracket rotatable on the plate, spring means in the mentioned recess to retain said bracket on said plate, an angularly faced lug on said bracket, a tube fixed on the bracket to surround said lug and extend angularly there-from, a handle fitted to said tube, and a spring in said tube between said lug and the inner end of said handle.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature.
ANTON GLOWA.
